Cheddar you have been most helpful.  So I will DV the CA, then if verified do I send letter stating SOL, and try to settle with deletion for less than they are offering now - 58%.

I ended up settling for 54% of my balance with CrapOne, but through a different CA. Maybe coincidentally, but it just happened to be just above what the past due balance was on my reports, not to be confused with the current balance due, which affects your scores...

wow, you're pretty much in the same situation i'm in. i had an account with cap one that i opened in 2002. the date of first delinquency was 08/2003. the collection agency is northland group. the sol is expired, but the delinquency is still being reported by cap one, and it's killing my credit score, cuz i don't have any other credit cards. So, i'm now trying to negotiate a pfd with northland group, so i can improve my score. I'm offering a settlement amount of 40%

For me paying a past debt was important. Granted, years ago I messed up and let the account go bad but it was important for me to pay my bills and not feel like a dead- beat. Even though the damage had already been done....... IMO
