Noticed something interesting. I like my payment due date on the 18th. When I got the AmEx Gold card 7/10, I asked to change my payment due at some point and my first statement closed 8/25 with a payment due 9/18 which is 2mos and 9 days (that's 71 days total). Same thing again when I got my AmEx Delta Reserve 8/2, my statement close and payment due date was originally 9/2 with payment due 9/27. I chatted with CSR some time after the 18th of this month to change the payment due date and now my first statement closes 9/23 (originally 9/2) with payment due 10/18 (originally 9/27) which is 2mos and 18 days (that's 78 days total). The original dates should have been about 57 days since I opened the card, but my Reserve card got an extra 21 days, or 3 weeks added to the cycle. Both times the CSR rep said the changes would take place for the next statement, so I assumed my original statement close and due dates would remain, but it did not. It's great because I'm able to spread out payments with some buffer but it was just interesting the way AmEx sets those due date changes. Curious if this is typical when you ask for a date change.
It varies by lender, but this is typical with Amex. (I've set the due date on most of my cards to the 27th so that they almost always close on the 2nd without the statement closing date jumping around) They do limit how often you can change your due dates on each card, though. I want to say it's once per year?
I wouldn't be changing it again as it's now set to the date I want. But good to know a date change gets me 3 weeks on a newly opened card if I needed to strategically buffer a payment for a large ticket purchase in the future.
I had a similar experience as yourself when I aligned my Delta Skymiles Reserve statement cut date with my Skymiles Platinum. It resulted in a similar experience as yours affording me a longer buffer for cycling payments, etc. Am thinking to align my recently opened EDP with the 2 Skymiles cards. Just prefer keeping it simple on the due dates. Perhaps, it'll result in a similar thing like yours/ my previous statement date change requests.
although not as drastic as yours, i changed my Amex Gold payment date from 28th of the month to the 1st (my statement close date was then 3rd). the CSR told me the change would not take effect until after the current month statement closed on the original date. the following month, my due date changed to 1st, and the statement date change to the 7th. I got an extra few days on the new month statement cycle. now it's on a normal 30 day cycle.
My guess is I think it's because I requested the change after the date for the current month had passed. So if i asked to change it to the 18th but made the request after the 18th of the current month, they would have to extend from there. 🤷🏻♂️
The due dates on Amex cards are always 25 days after the statement date. Amex simply extended the billing cycle to conform to your request.
I don't see anything strange about your experience. It is exactly what I would have expected.
