As it had been over 25 months since I applied for the Amex Business Marriott Bonvoy Card, I recently applied for the Chase Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Card since I should now be eligible for the SUB. To my surprise, I received the following popup after submitting my application:
I withdrew the application, of course. Yes, I have had the Starwood Preferred Guest Card, but it was product changed to the Starwood Luxury Card on launch day in August 2018 (and the card was later renamed the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Card). It's also a bit odd that Chase is still using both names for the $95 AF Amex Marriott Bonvoy Card (no longer available for application, but still serviced and still available for product changes) since the timelines listed for having held a card, being approved for a card, or having received a signup or upgrade bonus on any of these cards would be well past the discontinuance of using Starwood branding.
The wording for the SUB on the Chase card is pretty clear and I definitely should be eligibile to receive it, if approved.

The new cardmember bonus is not available to you if (1) you currently have or had any of the following cards within the last 30 days: Marriott Bonvoy® American Express® Card, The Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express; or if (2) you applied and were approved for any of the following cards within the last 90 days or (3) received a new cardmember bonus or upgrade bonus for any of the following cards within the last 24 months: Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card, Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express, Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card, Starwood Preferred Guest® American Express Luxury Card, Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express® Card.
1.) Those are the same card with the pre-Merger and post-Bonvoy naming, and I haven't had it in nearly 5 years.
2.) Nope. At time of application it was around 770 days.
3.) Again, a bit over 25 months since the SUB on the Amex Business Card, opted to not wait until a bonus was offered and never received an upgrade bonus for SPG Luxuy, and my SPG sub was received almost immediately after opening the card over 6 years ago.
Has anyone else had an issue with being cautioned that you would not receive a SUB for a Marriott (or other Chase) card with the reason stated that you have a card that you don't actually have? Has anyone run into this and been able to resolve it? This could be a tricky one, because it could either be on the Marriott, Chase, or Amex end, and I am sure contacting any of them they would just assign blame to one or both of the other parties involved in the "who has what card" information sharing on Marriott cards if for some reason it really is showing me as still holding the OG Starwood card.
For what it's worth, this time I started the application on the Marriott site while logged into my account. (Neither approved nor denied, and no HP done since I withdrew the application.) My Marriott account is credited with the correct number of elite night credits for both Bonvoy Brilliant and Bonvoy Business cards (40 total), I always see a "Maximize Your Card's Benefits. Discover offers and more." banner showing my Brilliant card when logging into Marriott, and when searching for properties I do have a tab with the Amex Biz Rate rates showing, so Marriott definitely knows I have the two cards that I do have.
I've had similar experience with the Amazon Amex business card. I canceled it two years ago. Amazon still shows that I have the card AMEX shows that it was closed. If I go to apply for a new Amazon card whether it's Chase or AMEX it brings me to Amazon to fill out the application. Amazon will bring up my old American Express business card and say so you already have this one you have no points blah blah blah, I called AMEX to actually confirm that it's closed, which it is. Dealing with Amazon is a nightmare. I've asked them to close it, they said they have which they obviously didn't. The only solace I got was from Amex who said if you want to reopen the card will do it for you, but that was it. It's tough when you're dealing with two different companies that obviously don't talk. Sorry you are going through something similar when dealing with multiple companies.
Maybe try applying on the chase website and see if you get the same pop-up.

@K-in-Boston Sorry about this message you received. Chase sent me a mailer to apply for one of their Marriott cards recently. It had the same warning language in it as you received. I didn't apply because of my interpretation of the warning. I read it as if you currently have an Amex Marriott card you are not eligible too. I think the amount of time since approval or since getting the sub doesn't matter if the account is still open. Just having it makes me ineligible.
I don't have an answer, but I'm following this thread for updates. I was thinking of getting the Boundless when under 5/24 in a few months, while also keeping my Amex Marriott card. But definitely don't want to miss out on the sub. I hope that, assuming this is a Marriott rule and not a Chase/Amex rule, they have not changed the wording or the interpretation of their own policy!

The last time I tried that was when I was not eligible for the sub but wanted to grab the no AF card anyway so I could PC to Ritz-Carlton after a year. I got HPs followed by a letter stating they withdrew my app because I was not eligible but I was welcome to call underwriting if I still wanted it anyway. Me and underwriting at Chase usually don't have pleasant conversations so I let it go. ( They seriously go account by account with me. "Okay, this $7 balance on your Kohl's card, what it that for and what are your plans for being able to pay this balance?" is an actual piece of historical conversation.)

In reply to others, I should be eligible for the SUB based on their wording and the previous agreement that Amex, Chase, and Marriott made when splitting up the Starwood and Marriott portfolios. While I have Brilliant and the Business Marriott from Amex, I do not have the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Card which is the old SPG, but I am wondering if there is a bug as mentioned above with Amex Amazon card that it's still in the system as me having SPG that was PCed to SPG Luxury on launch day.

@GoTarHeels Sorry to get off topic but I LOVE your user name! I'm a HUGE UNC fan myself!
Now back on topic, I wonder if it is worth calling them and asking them point blank if this is allowed? Not sure if you'd rather not draw any unnecessary attention to this? Just thinking it could be one way to know for sure before wasting an inquiry, or unnecesarily holding off applying for other cards to not add to your 5/24 status until you got this. I'd hate for you to put off other applications in vain.
