Chase Sapphire Preferred downgrade timing

Hello folks,

My Chase Sapphire Preferred card is due for the annual fee after completing 1 year.   I want to downgrade it to Freedom Flex.   Do I wait until the fee is posted to the account (happens in about 10 days) before I do the downgrade?   Or should I be doing it before that happens?

Please let me know.   Thank you!

Re: Chase Sapphire Preferred downgrade timing

If the year isnt quite up for you then I'd wait till it actually posts, just to be sure.

I recently had this situation come up last  month.  Although I had the CSP longer than one year (4 to be exact), it was time to downgrade. When I called customer Service line - retention dept -- the rep offered my a no annual fee Sapphire card, which allowed me to keep the same number and at that time the Annual fee was pending  (if I remember correctly). But once the card was converted it was then credited. This leaves me the option to apply for the Flex later and not miss out on the welcome offer of 20,000 UR points ( $200 cashback).

Hope this helps.
