Chase pay and Samsung Pay on Freedom

Last year I thought you got the Chase Pay bonus by using Freedom inside SP. I remember for the first few transactions I first went to Chase Pay, but then read (and found!) that that wasn't necessary.

But! I did a few small transactions on Oct 1 and 2, and the ones that posted got 1UR per $ only. So today I went to CP first, and then to SP, and now on the SP screen it also shows the CP icon. Which it doesn't if you don't use that route.

So, no short cuts, at least for me!

At home, I opened the Chase Pay app which still had my Freedom card info from past quarters. No changes. I didn't use it for any transaction that way, but I did press "Pay" and "PIN" which then directed "Enter Your Samsung Pay PIN".

I got to the checkout line at Costco and Chase wanted me to re-enter my password to get into the Chase Pay app. Chase doesn't give me the option of logging eye with an eye scan, so I had to enter my complex password, which I mistyped on the first try.

With people behind me in line and my belief in efficiency, I figured I'd just use Samsung Pay (which doesn't require me to log in, just to swipe and enter the PIN) and hope for the best. And I did get the 5x.

The first time that Chase Pay was a category, ALL mobile payments were included as a 5% category. I know Samsung Pay works differently than ApplePay though. Is there a way to trigger Chase Pay via using Samsung Pay?

Well, this is interesting and not in a good way. Before you could start the transaction on Chase Pay and could pay with QR code or if linked Samsung Pay, and it would redirect you to SP app to finish purchase. I'm not finding that at all now. It's been awhile since I've used CP so I dunno how long it's been like this

But I guess as long as you see little Chase Pay icon on payment of choice on Samsung Pay I guess they streamlined the process

*When I'm in Chase Pay and press Pay, it takes me to a sort of "hybrid app" page with logos for Chase Pay and Samsung Pay. I press the next Pay button and it asks my Samsung Pay PIN.

But I got 5x even without going through the hybrid app.

That is, it still takes me to Samsung Pay to complete the transaction.

Yep, took me longer but here's my datapoint as well.

For me I tested launching the Chase Pay app to see what options are provided and it all it does when I select cashier is give me the QR code to use; no redirects to Samsung Pay and no options as before to use SP so I can manually be redirected as well. I even force closed Chase Pay and when opening Samsung Pay the "link" is still there so hoping it works as intended without opening CP. I'll test it this weekend and see what it throws back for earnings

OK, NOW my SP shows CP icon on the Chase cards. I wonder if it is because I had to open Chase Pay once (like wascb14 did!) I recently had to readd all my cards to SP (my phone was in my pocket, apparently causing me to enter the wrong passcode 20 times, triggering Samsung Pay to remove all cards and close the account!) so maybe previous linkage was undone.

I haven't touched CP til today and I think I can say without being certain that CP didn't have to be open to trigger the link with SP even with the app updates. Even if it does I guess it doesn't hurt to open it real quick to be sure before using SP exclusively.
