I was attempting to do a product change with Citibank from AA Platinum Credit Card to a Citibank Premier Card. I was informed that I would lose my AA miles earned. Is this accurate? Less traveling and my home airport AA has cut back flight except for their major hubs. I fly more delta and southwest currently.
You might not get your current-CC-statement miles that haven't yet posted to your AA account.
AA miles expire after 18 months of inactivty. If you use the AA shopping portal for online shopping it's easy to keep your AA account active without flying.
You shouldn't lose anything that has already posted to your AA account unless they reach the 18 months expiration like @wasCB14 mentioned. You may lose ones that haven't posted. I too am trying to find out what to do with my Citi AADvantage card because I don't think I will fly in 2021 and I only kept the card for free checked bags (one trip with my wife is at least a $100 savings if we both check bags both direction).
If you still want to accumulate miles, downgrade to the MileUP card, this is my plan. Then you could apply for the Premier Rewards card and get the 60k bonus points which is what I would do if I wanted the card.

When you do redeem, keep an eye out for any devaluation. I don't expect that to happen to you, but my TYP were devalued in 2015 when I PC'd to DC. There was no indication or disclaimer to say that would happen if I PC'd without redeeming first, but they did it anyway. 1 year later, I got an apology letter in the mail and a statement credit for the cash equivalent of the devaluation.

@AnonymousIf you have a sizable amount of AA miles coming your way from your current statement then I'd hold off on PCing the card until the statement closes if time allows.
Also if you're not flying I wouldn't downgrade to the MilesUp card as that won't to you much good besides avoiding the AF.
There are a few ways to keep your AA mile alive even without the card. As mentioned you can use the AAdvantage Shopping Portal and they also have an AAdvantage Dining Program. Either one of those don't require much work and satisfies the requirement of keeping your miles alive.
Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.
We don't really know what other cards the OP has or really any details about the OP's spend or goals beyond wanting to keep their AA miles.
I should have probably added, if the OP is not in a position to want to open up any new accounts then yes by all means PCing to a TYP card is the way to go. Especially if the OP is already in the TYP ecosystem. If the OP can apply for the Premier card as a new account and meet the SUB spend then that seems like a much better route and at that point if the OP doesn't need the in-flight benefits than temporarily going to the MileUp℠ Card to avoid the AF is a good idea.
I certainly made some assumptions as to why the OP wanted to get rid of the AA Plat, which may have been incorrect assumptions.
