Closing a couple CCs

I am thinking about closing a couple cards. My Citi Rewards card and my Chase Slate card. They are both a little over 7 years old and are my lowest limit cards $1k.

I requested a CLI w/ Citi and it was denied. I haven't received the notice yet but I am sure I'll roll my eyes at the reasons. I just don't have a real use for the Citi Rewards. Also I have a few other Citi cards that I use more often with the same rewards or better.
I don't want a HP for a CLI w/ Chase so that will likely stay at $1k forever. Does anyone know how much of my CL my stay on my card? Or can I close it and transfer the entire limit to another card?

NFCU cash $50k | BofA Cash Rewards $35k | USAA Rate Advantage $20K | Amex BCP $18k| Costco Anywhere $18.5k | Amex HH Surpass $15k | BofA $14k | WF $14k | Apple Card $6.5k | Cap One QS $4.5k | Sephora Visa $4k | Discover It $8.5k | Citi DC $3.5k | Citi AA Mile Up $5.1k | Chase Amazon $3k | Amex ED $3k | Chase IHG $3k | Chase Freedom Unlimited $4k | Chase Freedom $2.5k | Citi Rewards $2k | Last HP 7/28/25

Re: Closing a couple CCs

You're one of the rare case that C1 CL is on the higher end in your card lineup 😆

Gimme Rewards, I like the design lol, bummer it's stuck.

I just closed 2 cards, C1 secured plat and Citi Best Buy store card, no use for them.

Would like to close Amazon store card too except for generous CLIs lol. Probably will though, CFF/Disco covers it for half a year.

Tomo too, 1% card no use, but it doesn't have FTF.

CFF maybe...lol(500 SL)

I'm assuming by Citi Rewards you mean Citi Rewards+, and by Chase Slate, you mean Chase Slate Edge?  For me, I see no need to actively close a no AF card.  Just stop using it and let the dominoes fall.  The Citi Rewards+ is a great card to enhance your TYPs from other cards like Citi DC and CC.  It's on my short list of next cards for that reason.  As for the Slate Edge?  I don't see any value to this card, unless I am missing something.

[Until I can make a pretty signature, here’s an updated draft]

Everyday 5% CB:
Chase prime Visa // citi CUSTOM CASH “A” // citi CUSTOM CASH “B” // citi SHOP YOUR WAY (5% gas (in points), lucrative spending offers) // mylowe’s Rewards // Target circle card // primis Perks debit Visa (50c CB per transaction (5% CB or more up to $10 spend))

5% CB rotating:
Chase “OG” freedom Visa // DISCOVER it Cash Back // nusenda CU Platinum Cash Rewards

Everyday 4% CB:
US Bank Smartly (v1.0)

Everyday 3% / 2.2% CB:
AOD FCU Visa Signature (3%, sockdrawered) // upgrade Cash Rewards Elite (2.2%, sockdrawered)

Welcome Offer / credits only:
Chase SAPPHIRE PREFFERED (grabbed my $1,000, sockdrawered, will cancel) // NFCU FLAGSHIP REWARDS (elevated Welcome Offer, annual prime credit, sockdrawered)

Hotel card:
Chase IHG ONE REWARDS PREMIER (elevated Welcome Offer, 1 free night/yr)

On my radar:
Langely FCU Signature Cash Back (5% CB monthly selectable cat) // Safe CU Cash Back+ (Quarterly rotating 5% CB cats plus bonus cats) // upgrade MyFive Cash Rewards (5% CB monthly selectable cat) // US Bank Kroger (and family) World Elite Master Card(s) (5% CB Mobile Wallet)

Re: Closing a couple CCs

I do understand why people on here would keep a useless credit card open BUT I prefer to close lines I am not using simply to negate any fraud, identity theft, unauthorized charges etc. Why leave that open for someone to take advantage of, especially when I hear "sock drawer it and forget it".  Like don't check on the account until it becomes an issue with theft?  I would rather close it then forget it.

Yes.   While not always the case, I think as your file becomes very thick, this type of argument becomes more important than worrying about keeping cards open for age purposes, it simply matters less.  (The other reasons people give for retention, such as the ability to one day PC to a good card, or it could denerf etc, still apply, but IMO were never that convincing)

Re: Closing a couple CCs

@Kennie02 I am BIG on closing cards you don't need.  I just recently gave 3 of my cards the CHOP!!  I used to wholeheartedly subscribe to the "if there's no annual fee, I sock-drawer it" but recently I'm just thinking I don't need any loose ends hanging out there, so I chopped them.  The Slate is completely useless.  With Chase you have to move the limit over while the card is still open, and they'll only allow you to take the Slate down to $500.  The other $500 can be moved over, but you've got to leave $500 on the donor card.  Ymmv of course, but I aint mad at ya.  I can see the argument for keeping the Citi card, but its definitely not a must.  If you think it should go, then dispense with it and keep moving forward!

I fought hard for the CL w/ CapOne! Many years ago you were able to email the CEO and get a CLI. I believe there was a post on here that told me that. It will likely never increase from my experience w/ requesting CLIs.  I do like no FTF and like I said the credit history is why it's SD.

I get that. I felt that way too but now I am trying to trim down my open accounts. My card is a Citi Rewards+ that got PCd from a Simplicity. I wanted rewards but I just don't see the value in the TYP. Maybe I'll look into it more before closing since I have a Double Cash too.
As far as my Chase card it is not a Chase Edge. It's a Chase Slate. The Edge is the newer version of this card (which I don't know anything about) and as far as I know my card hasn't been changed. I opened this 7+ years ago and did a BT. It initially had a higher limit which I transferred to my Amazon Prime card because I use that frequently. There are no benefits to it really. Other than sometimes they have some cash back offers but nothing else. I have 5 Chase cards which is a lot. I'd like to add a Sapphire or something like that in the future. I am not sure if Chase has a limit on cards but having one less to make room can't hurt.
