Closing cards

I  decided I needed to close some of my accounts. Today I closed Kohls--300 limit and Friday I closed Brylane Home--250 limit, Dressbarn--1000 limit, Lane Bryant--500 limit and Torrid--900 limit. All of these cards were approved via HP, no SCT. I got these cards for my wife who was a size 14 and now is a size 10 working on size 8.  I have no use for these cards now that my wife is smaller. I don't think it will affect my scores as I have 52,000 available credit and only owe 956.00. I plan on applying for the CITI Simplicity  and Chase Freedom  around January and I want my report looking good. Today my Fico scores are TU-735--20 inquires, EX 732--15 inquires and EQ 739--17 inquires. All inquires are from the last 8 months. I had 25 accts and now have 20. Do you think January would be a good time to apply?  Also no lates, no derogs, no bk and no public records. Salary is 65,000 per year.

If you have added more than 5 accounts in the last two years (or in the two years before January) you won't be able to be approved for the Freedom as Chase has instituted a new policy.

Re: Closing cards

When January rolls around, how many of those inquiries will be under a year old?

@Dannyboy,

You must really love your wife but TMI (About her sizes)Smiley Very Happy..  Very good dedication and I applaud you for it.  Now, your scores look good but inquiries and new accounts are a bit much.

Although you are still going to apply in January, cross Chase out.  Citi is also inquiry and new account sensitive.  Are there other cards you'd like apart from those 2?

Re: Closing cards

I guess I will just not get the Chase Freedom then. I have 3 Chase accts at the moment, AARP Visa -4,000 Amazon Visa-2,000 and Zappos Visa 5,000.

3 inquires from December 2014 and the rest the last 6 months

That's going to make it tough for the Citi card as well but if you don't add more inquiries between now and January I think you still have a chance with Citi as they are more concerned with inquiries in the previous six months.

Re: Closing cards

I will be looking for a good cash rewards card, 0%  for at least a year and a good APR after that with at least a 5000 SL

Consider the Capital One Quicksilver.  Inquiries aren't a big issue with them normally and they have been giving out hefty starting limits.

I think you meant to say the Cap 1 Venture card?  The QS is sill giving out meh limits.  You can get 15K on the Venture and the same day get 5K on QS.

No, actually did mean the QS.  They're have been several people getting some hefty CLs with that card as well.  Plus it's a true cash back card unlike the Venture
