Auto-CLIs are almost always given on a set schedule and are computer-generated. BofA is VERY generous with CLIs, and they are almost always cost nothing more than a soft pull. If you've had your card for three years, have treated the card well during that time, and have never received a CLI, you really won't lose anything by asking for one, and you will most likely get it.
