Exxon and Shell are gas stations with convenience stores. As long as the gas purchase itself codes as a gas dispencer, you will get your 4%. But you won''t in places like Safeway gas stations (usually), because those will just code as a Safeway (grocery) purchase.

If in doubt always pay for the gas at the pump, it should always code as gas station.

Pumps should code as "Automatic Fuel Dispensers", but this may exclude grocery stores with gas stations if they code as "grocery stores". However, convenience stores may still code as "Service Stations", even if they no longer sell gas. I'd had success with both Circle K and 7-Eleven being coded as "Service Station".
