Re: Credit Card Debt

Stay focused please.  OP has a legitimate issue, and while some frank discussion is warranted, evaluating people's opinions based on credit history is baseless and not helpful.

Over $20,000!??!?! Don't be ridiculous.

You nor I have any idea of the OP's income, debt obligations, spending habits, family/marital situation, etc.

They came here looking for legitimate help, not some one line BS about filing bankruptcy over $20k with no supporting evidence as to why its a good idea.

+1

Constructive advice isn't don't have CC again and how does that help him in his present situation?  And  he never answer why he has gotten into these problem now and in the past.  Until he answers those questions then we could give better advice.

And for the one who wrote people PIF and just get rewards where did you come up with that because that certain isn't the majority of people on here and definitely not the general population.

quote me... "many of us PIF"

I never said it was the majority

I use my cards as charge cards.  I don't pay CC interest.

I carry a balance for 1 or 2 months on 0% cards for larger purchases.

This keeps me from spending outside of my means while adding to my income.

Why would you possess a rewards card or make a bonus spend just to give it away in interest?

"PIF"  is advice to the OP of this thread.

Ok  "many of us PIF" what percentage is many?  Also I didn't see you do a survey poll to see many of us PIF or have seen a thread asking the question.  Most of the time people on here carry a balance.  So just because you do something like xyz doesn't mean everybody does or should.
The advice to the OP to "PIF is advice to the OP of this thread" makes no sense if he could PIF his 20k debt do you think he would be writing to ask for advice?
Would you say you have good credit?  Do you have an auto loan in your name?

I think you both make valid points.  PIF is the ideal, but certainly not the norm (on this board or in society in general).  If it were, lenders would be making billions less in interest fees.

I think what the OP needs is two things:  A budget and a system of accountability.  The first one is obvious, but two prior BK indicate someone who is not living within his means and lacks personal discipline (unless there is some type of family/medical emergency or lay off situation at play).  Hopefully there is someone in his life whom he respects and can share this situation with, and have that person hold him accountable.

$20,000 is a pretty big nut to crack, but it can be done.  I had well over that amount (not to mention a bushel of collections, charge offs, etc) and was able to work myself out of it without declaring bankruptcy.  I took an extra PT job at OficeMax and later Home Depot, cut out most of my non-essential expenses and ate a truckload of ramen and hamburger helper! Smiley LOL  But I came out of it wiser and more disciplined.  I also had friends and family who provided lots of moral support.

OP we cannot do it alone...so be sure to reach out to someone in your life who can help you through this.

Re: Credit Card Debt

OP, first of all breathe!  This is doable.  You got this!  You can do it!  OK, so so far you have managed to keep up all payments.  I didn't read through the thread, but do you have a 2nd job, or some way of generating extra money.  OK, once have that, let's take it one bill at a time.  For me, I was able to get a raise on my job which resulted in 200 extra a pay period in my paycheck.  With you second job, start with the lowest card and put any extra money on that.  Do you have anything you can sell?  books, old clothes, etc.  The important thing to realize is to tackle one card at a time, and know that you didn't create this overnight, so you won't get out of it overnight, but you can do it.  ONE CARD AT A TIME!!!

Re: Credit Card Debt

I agree, $20K in debt could be a possibility to file bankruptcy, as extreme as it may seem.

I disagree as well considering two prior bankruptcies were filed already. Also, by the amount of store cards the OP has I do not believe the 20K in debt is the result of some family emergency. It is more likely than not the result of a shopping addiction. I am no Dr. Phil (thank the Good Lord) but I fear that until the OP can get a handle on their addiction and change their thought patterns, the OP will just be caught in the vicious cycle of shop faster than I can work - a spin cycle that will never stop. Cut up the cards is step 1. If the OP can't do that then everyone who is trying to help is just wasting their time.

A challenge to the OP: Lay out all your cards, take a picture and then upload the picture (if we even can upload pictures on this forum). Then, one by one cut up your cards taking a picture each time and upload those. Then, when all the cards are gone, you can get serious about reducing your debt.

I wouldn't cut them up. Freeze them in a block of ice.

Re: Credit Card Debt

Thanks for the encouraging statements....I must have picked a board with the members who don't have credit card debt....lol.. Well I went back and recalculated my pymts and not quite eight hundred a month. I will say that it looks like a lot of assumptions have been made about my situation. I guess I didn't explain everything. I do have a descent take home income just don't want to spend all on credit card payments. My two bankruptcy were years ago and yrs a part and they were related to medical and loans very few credit cards. I don't plan on filing bankruptcy. Again thanks for the encouraging comments. I came to the board for some suggestions but I must say not really feeling the love on this board.

No i too have CC debt about 7k and yeah 20k is doable. As for not wanting to spend it all on CC payments, you might need to spend a little extra. I mean a CC is literally borrowed money. Sadly life does happen and we do what we need to do to get on by even if that means a CC so now is the time to pay it back. Personally i like to make my minimum payments on all cards at least that way i dont forget to pay any. Then if i have any extra money i choose 1, and pay a bit extra. Its easier to pay off CC's once the amount of cards is lowered. Like currently i have 3 cards with debt on of which its going to be 2 soon. Also i would suggest not using any cards till all paid off.
