At worst, if the fee gets passed on to consumers it should, by law, be disclosed beforehand and should be exactly the fee charged them by the processing network: no charging customers the Visa fee when they use an Amex.
I think in some cases that is unnecessarily complex as the fee differs by level of card amongst other things. So I show my card and get told there will be a 20c flat fee + 2%, so I take out another card and ask how much and so on. I think it's fine to be told say 3% and decide if I want to use my card or not.
Lots of other things go into merchant markup (rising cost of fuel etc) without the consumer being able to demand both details and pay only that exact amount.
My wife went to pay the registration on my car. I asked her to see if the DMV accepts credit cards. Well, they do........... for a $49 service fee, and $6.95 shipping (the cheapest shipping option (there is no shipping charge if you pay by check)).
@CreditCuriosity wrote:I think merchants that accept credit cards should eat the fee it is called the cost of doing business. Either take cc's and dont charge a mark-up or be "cash" only. I obviously would take CC's and just make cash/cc all one price and no extra charge for CC's and just put it into cost of goods to avoid complaints
I agree. You're accepting them for the convenience of the customers. So why penalize people who take advantage of the convencience?

I think that's um, not convincing! In lots of cases, there are extra charges for "convenience", e.g. first class travel, or where you pay extra for valet parking. So the consumer can decide to use a credit card, to get some rewards and get a float, or pay over time, and in return, the merchant adds a charge to make up for increased processing costs.
In my geo area north central US, the merchants got together and all use 3.9% adder as a processing fee. Now whether it costs them that much or not makes no difference. They worked through the local chambers of commerce. They said cash or check is fine!
Now as I recall, merchants like the credit cards as they reduced the getting stuck with bad checks ... and it was much faster. Well good bye to the modern age. Gen Zs and Mills better start raising some cane as the old farts won't be able to and many still love their checks in my area. Heaven forbid
Did confront some merchants and the local Ford Dealer who informed me that it saves him $100,000 a year (we have not spoken since and I use a different dealer - no winner here).
Need to report my local banker wants to loose Debit Cards as he finds them too much trouble. You know for the older folks I can believe it but, hey younger generation wake these merchants up!!! I don't write five checks a year ...

There is such an increase of merchants charging a fee for paying by credit cards. I just paid a doctor bill online and there was a $1.53 CC charge on the bottom of the bill.
I forgot where I was but a couple of days ago another merchant told me of the fee prior to pay with Visa.
They basically cancel the cash rewards.

Where I am in the North East, this is standard (and very frustrating ) particularly when it comes to dining. What good is having a 5% CB card for dining say (Citi CC) when the establishment charges 3.99% for CC use. I know the standard reply would be "well, just don't go there" from those of us in the CC game (non-CC gamers would just say use cash). But when they are all starting to do it, kinda kills this CC hobby were are all into

By me they call it "a discount for using cash" which in reality is "a fee for using a credit card".
