I remember that rule being big of Flyertalk MS forums back in the day, probably still is! People would call asking if it would be OK to buy a lot of Visa gift cards "for the rewards" and other people basically yelling at them.
For those not yet fully up to speed: if you are doing anything that could be considered slightly off/shady/unusual/abusive (choose your phrase), basically anything other than buying normal goods or services and paying for them, never a) ask the issuer for permission, and b) if something goes wrong, and you don't get the reward you expect, even if it worked before, don't call asking why!
