For me, $10k or higher for a general purpose credit card.
3k-5k. Enough that you aren't feeling like you're strapped to a toy card limit
@CreditScholar wrote:For me personally, I would expect no less than 15-20k for a starting CL. Half of my cards are already there.
In general though:
Decent = $5000
Good = $10,000
Excellent = $15,000+
If you have less than a 5k limit, you're automatically cutoff from certain levels of cards (mostly visa signatures and world mastercards). "Decent" should mean that you're at least eligible for them. Whether you want them or not is another story, but it's good to have options.

I think this sums up my thoughts as well.
One that is just high enough for your needs and yet low enough to use without getting yourself in trouble.
High CLs don't impress me. High FICO scores and the ability to manage what you have does.
I'd say anything $5K or higher is good, but now that I've had a taste of $20K limits, I like limits more in the $15K range, though it's not realistic for me with every creditor.
+2!

1K - Meh
2K - Okay, I guess
5K - Decent
10K - Yay!
10K+ - Cowabunga!
Give me a 2.5K starting limit card with a good possibility of it growing over time and I will be a happy camper.
@Revelate wrote:Not sure how to do a poll here, but I've seen a few posts recently talking about decent credit limits; we've had the question in the past of what's your highest CL, but I'm curious as to what you all consider to be respectable?
In my current existence, I have about 1K worth of random expenses (meals and what not) in any given month, so to me even a 1K limit is decent so I don't have to pay multiple times during a month if I'm running most of my life through that one card. I'm known as a cheap bastard though so YMMV
.
What are your thoughts, and also why?
@Interesting poll revelate. I am currently where you are, with two cards of my own @ $1,000. I am pleased with where I am now, considering where I have been, but I do find I am paying my balances two and three times a month with my $1,000 limits. Recently I was added as an AU on a mastercard with a $4,250 limit and I imagine I will use this one more often, until I get my limits in the $3,000-5,000 range.
And I have also been referred to as a cheap bastard...I find it has served me well and turned a spender into a saver.
Thanks for the interesting thread.
IMO, A Decent CL is about 5 times the normal monthly spending amout.
This way you can pay in full on the due date and the utilization on that card will be about 20%. It also leaves enough room for occosional out of the ordninary expenses.
Of course if you are obsessed with <9% utiliation, you would need 10X your average spending.
