Declined - Discover $100 Walmart Gift Card Purchase

I figured I'd try a $100 Walmart gift card purchase using Discover, since its in the 5% category, plus I have a 2% additional bonus on all purchases through 12/15. Total 7% cash back.

It got declined both days I tried. I made another purchase using the card for something else between those 2 fails without issue.

I wonder if I try it after the 15th, the transaction will go through. They may not want to pay out 7% in rewards for a gift card.

Call Discover and see what the issue is. I had a simeler issue on a diffrent card and fraud prevention were being extra strict with gift cards with all the scams going around.

Try buying something else together with the gift card. That might do the trick.

The first time I tried it, it was flagged for potential fraud, got a text from Discover, responded Y that it was my purchase, and tried to purchase again, and it failed. Today I tried again and it failed. Just called Discover and they said since the charges were immediately reversed (which I can see in pending transactions), that its not on their end. After the call I tried it using a PC instead of phone and it failed again.

0 for 4. It must be that Walmart determined that the card was flagged by the issuer and I cannot use the card for gift card purchases now.

That could be a potential issue for those who max out 5% categories when Walmart.com is one of the 5% categories. If your card is conditionally declined when purchasing gift cards, Walmart might flag the card and disallow it for future use.

The same happened with my DW Discover on walmart.com.

$25 Google Play card denied. 

After 2 or 3 tries it flagged her account and I couldn't use any credit card on her account.

Tried my Discover card on my walmart.com account and it worked fine.

I think it was walmart.com just being as horrible as always.

Are you trying to buy the E-Giftcard or the plastic giftcard?  Plastic giftcard usually gives less trouble. There is slightly different card processing in the backend between the two types. The E-Giftcard tends to have some kind of risky transaction flag due to the vendor that services the e-giftcards for walmart.

The first time she actually tried to use the card, it was declined...at Sam's Club (a Walmart subsidiary).

egift card. I can try the physical gift card. But I've had 4 declines in the last couple of days. I guess Discover isn't suspicious of it, which is a little surprising since I hit up that card for about $900 this month, the fastest pace of spend I've ever had on the card. My spending pattern on the card this month is very unorthodox.

Yep I'm pretty sure it's the E-giftcard that's the problem.   The plastic giftcard is treated like a normal merchandise transaction.  The E-giftcard is slightly different. I've heard of cases where the plastic giftcard gets oonus category CC rewards, and the e-giftcard purchase does not on certain cards.
