Nice, congrats!

Discover is awesome about this type of thing!

If people are interested in more data points a couple of years I called them and was given a similar offer: 0% for 12 months then back to my original or a permanent reduction of about 0.5%-1% (it's been awhile so I don't remember how much exactly). I too took the permanent offer. Then last month I called and asked again. This time I was offered a temporary 3% APR for a year or a permanent reduction of 3%. Once again I took the permanent offer. I thought it was odd my other choice was 3% temp this time instead of 0% temp - not as good obviously - yet my permanent reduction rate offer was much higher this time.

For reference I've never paid any interest at all to Discover. I've always PIFed. I just want the lowest APR possible just in case. I'm at a permanent rate of 14.49% now.

Congrats on your APR reduction!Smiley Happy

I too recently got the same reduction you did.  However I had no idea there might have been an additional offer of 0% interest.  I can always get the interest reduced later, I think I would have gone with the 12 mos of 0%.  Maybe next round they'll present that offer (my goal is to get to 11.99% eventually which is their lowest).  Congrats on the reduction!

Honestly I couldn't care less about 0% APR on purchases since I get 0% APR on BT's all the time... If I need it I am fine paying a 3% Fee and just BT it to a card. I would always take a perm % decrease.

I agree in principle (I'm carrying a BT right now) however I'm going to have to move the balance somewhere else when the first year 0% APR is over since I like to use my Discover card for the 5% categories, and using it without a 0% promo while carrying a BT causes interest to accrue on the new purchases.  Smiley Frustrated

This is the second post I've read of yours where you've provided this information uncleB. Thanks! I don't ususally use my Discover while I have a BT, but this is good information to have in one's memory bank.

I chated earler today. They said you have to wait 6 months between APR reduction requests. Thats ok, I can wait another 2 months Smiley Wink

Just FYI

My last APR resuction was 1/20, so I chated today 7/20... They can't lower the APR since it hasn't been 6 months.

After informing them that it has been exactly 6 months, they looked into it a bit and suggested i try again tomorrow Smiley Wink

i know this is an older post, and sorry if I am stepping on any toes, UncleB is very helpful here.  My SO has a discover card. Anything you pay above the minimum payment will apply to balances with higher interest rates first, per the credit card act.  In fact, it even discerns between multiple bt promos and will apply to the ones that end first (if you had no purchases that were being charged interest.  The only downside to this is  you have no way of manually allocating payments on your account.

It is totally possible AFAIK to use the discover card for balance transfers and still take advantage of category spending.

Not stepping on any toes at all my friend!  Smiley Wink

I'm glad to hear it worked out for your SO, and that it's possible to take advantage of BT offers while also taking advantage of category spending!

I do wish Discover would clarify this on their site (as Capital One has done) so there would be no question.  This isn't one of those things you can easily 'try for yourself', at least not without repercussions if you're wrong.  Smiley Frustrated

In my case my 0% on new purchases is over this month, but my 0% BT doens't expire until October.  I would have liked to have taken advantage of the category spending while enjoying the remaining months of 0% on the BT, but I was afraid to risk it (due to the verbiage on the site) so I did a BT over to BoA.  In the end I got a nice CLI from Discover ($4k) once the balance was paid down so it wasn't so bad, but it's the 'not knowing' that's annoying.

Thanks again for sharing!  Smiley Happy

I was approved with an APR of 10.99% back in 2014, before the Feds increased the base rate. Right now it sits at 11.24%. As a result, I would think it's entirely possible!
