Discover More, anyone else recent over the phone?

I had a chance at a perk with a partner site if I was approved for the Discover More card. So... I app'd (not thinking I'd get a very good CL). I got the 30 day message... So I called the next day (thinking there was an issue with my address's, it looks confusing on TU). They said no issue, that I probably got the 30 day message due to the number of applications at that time. I was approved by the analyst for 6500, 0% for 15 months, did a small transfer. That was last Thursday. Today I checked status and it said approved for 4k.  Anyone else have something like this happen?

Anyone have an opinion about asking about that issue when I call to activate the card when it arrives?  I'm thinking about bringing it up when I call to see if they'll re-instate the 6500 CL I was originally told.

well, I would let Discover know by phone that your was approved for the amount the analyst approved you for.  it should be simple and professional.  They are very friendly if you ask me.

You definately should mention it but I have noticed that Discover rarely approve a CL over $5000 for a new member.

I didn't realize that, I've heard they're kind of on the conservative side.  When I called (for an analyst not a CSR), the gentleman on the phone asked if 6500 was ok, I said 10k would be better if possible. He said "it's saying I can increase you to 7000 with a BT" and asked if I'd like to try that and see. I told him I could BT a small balance I have (balance under 400). He put that in, and said it wouldn't raise the limit, that if it were to take me too the 6500 or over, it would have allowed him to go over the 6500 or something. I wasn't going to max out the card as a test.  I mentioned to him the other balances were mostly long term 0% or already lower (payment not showing on CR's yet) and I wasn't sure what if anything else I wanted to BT yet, being there is a 3% BT fee right away.

The higher limit would be nice mostly to help with Util due to 0% balances that make no sense to pay off totally.  Now I'm thinking NFCU would have been a better use of an INQ even as a co-applicant (parent) for that purpose.

I really appreciate the input (I've never had Discover before). With any luck, when the card arrives it will state the original CL I was told instead of what it stated in online status. I should add I haven't received an email from them yet after 5 days (don't know if that's the norm or not).

Thought I'd update. The card came, 4k listed. Called to activate and mentioned it. Went through a couple people, they found the 6500 in the system as approved before and decided a glitch in the system lowered my limit due to the small BT so they reinstated the 6500. A dept. manager had to do it and called me later to confirm it. Very nice people on the phone and easy to understand (even adjusted the mic when the volume seemed a bit low after a transfer to another line).  No cash bonus but 0% for 15 months (almost rather have the bonus lol).

They mentioned the 6500 was only due to them being a conservative lender and I'd probably be CLI'd after either 3 months or 6 months. I kind of pressed them about the "surety" of the 6500 not "changing it's mind again" and was assured it wouldn't lower for no reason and the 4k was merely a glitch.  I'm more impressed and happier SO far than I thought I would be with Discover Smiley Happy

Was also a bit impressed by some of the discounts I didn't know about before that I saw on shopDiscover. Looks like it will actually save me a bit on things I'd buy anyway.

Congatulations! That's definately a steller CL for a Discover card! Glad everything worked out.  What were your scores at the time of your App?

Thanks CM Smiley Happy

The score thing is where it's proves something I've thought all along. Even "FICO's" are in a way "FAKO's"   I thought they must have pulled TU (according to MyFico, my highest at 688). They actually pulled EQ (according to my bought FICO, 613). According to lender pulls, my FICO EQ is actually.....  660 (Discovers letter as FICO)  AND 694 (listed by yet another lender, I think Chase as FICO).  My FICO EX provided by AMEX for a member on BCE 648, my FICO EX provided by another lender ( I forget which off hand) 703. My Walmart FICO TU 671.  ALL FICO's.......  ie: FAKO FICO's vary.  So I can't say other than them being closer to what lenders MIGHT use that FICO is anything near a "standard", a "standard" is used across the board so there is no such score other than a FAKO.  Although the ones here are most representative of what you need to know going into an app with a lender, and somewhat worth paying for. The different scoring methods allowed is a lot like "too many cooks in the kitchen" for my taste or any level of "standard" to be considered a standard. Smiley Very Happy

So what we REALLY have is:  Full out FAKO's and FICO FAKO's (thanks to CRA's allowing more than one method) and no real standard at all.

The only thing all my reports had in common is the info contained in them. Never a late or any other derog, nor a public record etc. All green payment history (perfect on 15 accounts including a couple closed still showing). An oldest account on record of 22.8 years and (thanks to AMEX backdating Zync) an AAoA of 3.7 years (EQ and TU) and 4.7 years (EX). Info that varied was inq's  TU 2, EQ 3 and EX 7. According to FICO, to me, my EQ is the worst and that's what they pulled (as per letter).

So now there's the answer to anyone's question of "Why didn't I get a better limit than ____?, I have much higher scores all around" and similar questions people might have. It's not the score so much as the history and what's in the report. A computer checks the score (I think) and hands it off to a human to examine the rest.  Oh, and I do have high utilization (close to 70 I think, a lot due to property renovation, depends who reported a payment, that was my last view before applying). I did inform them it made no sense for me to pay off 0% balances and that the util would vary a lot.

I have to say, if I were the boss, there would be a standard that was across the board within FICO at least, not just a tighter "circle of generalization" with different methods allowed at once (not FICO's fault, but the CRA's).  I have to agree with others that remind us all that the score is only a small part of the story, like the tip of an iceberg. My guess is I have a thicker clean file than some with my score (it is over 20 pages afterall, yes I printed them lol).

Thanks again on the congrats, I appreciate it and I'm glad I was approved for what I was. After researching I've seen how right you are about it being a bit stellar. Makes me feel like I'm making headway from when all my closed accounts fell off my report years ago. Smiley Happy

I also hope all the TMI helps others understand their reports vs scores importance and how they might work together.
