Discover Secured Pre-approval

Hi all!!

Got the pre-approval for the secured card. Wanted to know is it worth jumping on it now or waiting until my profile looks better to see if I qualify for an unsecured card. My offer is good until the 3rd. From what I have been seeing is that most people have their cards unsecure around 7 months and seem to get alittle increase after. Also, after the initial deposit can you add more to increase your limit or what you open with stands?

Thank you!

What other cards do you have, what are their limits, and how long have you had them? That information would likely help determine the best route to take.

Re: Discover Secured Pre-approval

I got this as my first card & had it unsecured after 7 months. I’ve had a very positive experience.

It is possible to add more to your initial deposit, and I’d recommend doing so, as it impacts the credit limit you’ll have going forward. Typically, they give a x2.5 CLI with the return of the deposit (this is not at all guaranteed)

It’s also worth noting you can convert the card to the regular it, getting the rotating 5% Rewards. The current category is amazon (by far the best catagory yet, imo)

That said, with your current cards, it’s not strictly nessessary to get this card, unless it has some sort of reward or benefit you’d like to take advantage of.

@Kredit9 thank you! Just didn't know if it would help my profile to have at least 3 bank cards or not as I eventually late next year sometime want to go for a BOA and Amex.

Re: Discover Secured Pre-approval

For score maximization, you do want to have at least 3 total revolving lines of credit, with 1 reporting a small balance and others reporting a zero balance. Beyond that, more CCs don’t help TOO much (more accounts IS always better, if only slighty, &; over time getting more cards early on helps AAoA later down the line, but you’re running up against a diminishing returns curve. For non-CC lines of credit, getting more CCs beyond 3 may or may not help at all)

You’ll find a lot of ppl here really maximizing their scores by getting every card they can get their hands on and then making sure they use each card at least once every few months, so that their AAoA never significantly drops, even if they add 2-3 new cards at once, but, tbh, if you get a few revolving lines and pay as agreed for about 10 years, you’ll never need to worry about demonstrating credit worthiness to a CC issuer again (totally different story when it comes to getting other types of credit, but again, additional CCs won’t help a mortgage score.)

Furthermore, 1 derogatory is enough to tank your score, even if you have 30 CCs.

Re: Discover Secured Pre-approval

@Kredit9 Understood. Outside of having student loans which my oldest is 15years and a car loan which is coming up on 2 years, my AAoA is low with revolving credit. Wish I would've known about this place a few years ago who knows where I would be now. But oh well have to start somewhere.

Re: Discover Secured Pre-approval

I think you're in good shape to apply for a Discover secured card right now. Or you'd be in good shape to apply for an unsecured Discover once your accounts age a few months. They're both good options. You can't go wrong either way.

I woudn't mess with any other secured cards, though. Your current cards will put you in the position for plenty of good products soon enough. Discover is an exception because it's the best of the bunch.
