I have one AMEX personal credit card and three business cards; no charge cards. Would I be eligible for a fifth total card--a personal card? Thanks.
At one point AMEX did go to firm-ish 4 credit card limit but they have rescinded that and reverted back to a 5 card threshold.
Not all cardholders will be approved for a 5th credit card but they will also go past the 5 card threshold for their absolute best and high-spend clients.

They used to have a 5 credit card limit, then lowered it to 4, then raised it back to 5. But these limits are for the ordinary folks. As @coldfusion points out, there are some customers Amex just loves, who it seems can have as many cards as they would like ![]()

I have 2 business Cc and 4 personal Cc's total 6
I'm capped at the moment at AMEX Green + three AMEX credit cards (Hilton Aspire, Bonvoy Brilliant and Delta Gold). This cramps my style a bit, but just a bit.

The charge card doesn't count against the limit. You can have 5 credit cards + 1 charge card.

1 charge card.10 charge cards.
Updated.
I believe it will be case by case. I believe they use to have a hard limit, but by personal experience, I have personally went beyond the 4 or 5 or 6.

I stand corrected

I gotta love it when AMEX specifically tells me "you're at your limit with your three credit cards and a Green", eventually causing me to have to dump a card (I had to swap a Hilton Amex for a Delta Gold), and myFICO tells me I'm experiencing part of a mass hallucination instead of relating a data point that yes, AMEX can consider a Green to be a charge card.
That is my literal data point up there in a myFICO thread, plus a further data point: I was not approved for the Delta Gold until I dropped a credit card. I had to call into Recon after I cancelled the Hilton Amex.
But anyway... apparently (?) my limit might be five not four, if reports from A Certain Very Naughty Site are correct (linked by DoC). Which is nice since I'm probably not done fiddling with AMEX yet. Though I should probably give it a rest for the rest of 2021.
