I made a purchase with the debit card, with backup funding through the PPCB card. Turns out it was an over-payment and the vendor credited the entire charge. This now appears as money in my Paypal account, and doesn't appear to get sent back to the credit card.
Is that what other people have found? If so, I made just over $4 from PPCB, riches beyond the dreams of .....
Yeah, I stumbled across this as well a while ago but didn't want to bring it up because I can see the MS abuse potential in this.
Not really the best thing to say publicly that’s for sure... I guess we should all enjoy our cards while this lasts because now that it’s out there, it’s a matter of time before it leaves here and PayPal takes action ...

This really has very little true MS potential, too complex and caps get in the way. And not sure why Paypal would care!

@Saeren: You mean I just apped for that for nothing? 😉
Remember, Paypal decided to enable this particular set up, the only credit card that the debit backup can be linked to is the PPMC. So I assume they are aware of the way this is used and don't have concerns. And Sync must agree. Obviously there is some "special" financial relationship here, or they would allow other credit cards as backup (or not allow any)
So I just used it for the first time and there are a few notes.
1) I get instant email notifications from PayPal when I use this card whereas I get no notifications from Sync when I use the PayPal Cashback directly. This is a huge pro and will get me to use the card more often.
2) You have to check the transaction coding. I had three purchases from Microsoft store for Xbox games go through and one of them coded as PIN-less debit which means no 1% cash back but the regular 2% will hit.
This means that I will have to take a gamble on what Xfinity Mobile does when they take my bill and what Comcast does when I pay that particular bill with it. Hopefully they code as signature otherwise this will blow up my plans to use this as a 3% utilities solution and since using the chip forces debit at Kroger stores, I can’t use it as a 3% groceries card.
Since there is a minimum of $100 in credit transactions required to be paid the 1% cash back you earned, it’s important to make sure the things you charge show up with the correct coding.
It’s not foolproof as far as getting the 3% by any means but it’s a far more pleasant way to use the PayPal Cashback card with the transaction notifications and everything so there’s that.

Thanks for reporting your experience. I would like to comment on your points:
1) I never got a notification when using the debit card but I haven't used it in a while since I was working on minimum spend so maybe they added that feature recently. Also synchrony has alerts but setting them up is kinda hard.
2) I am having hard time undertstanding how you made three purchases at the same merchant -be it online or physical store- and they didn't all code the same way (debit or non-debit). I know for a fact that some merchants -be it online or physical store- will always code debit while others will always code credit. For example GEICO codes this card as debit so you can't earn 3% on your insurance with GEICO. For Kroger I recommended in the topic to buy gift cards online for stores that code as debit and then use those gift cards at said stores so you can still earn 3% I think buying gift cards on monthly basis is a good idea so you don't over-stock on them and guarantee hitting the $100 minimum.

I agree that it's a good idea to track your transactions and test it with your go to merchants to make sure you are getting the full 3% back.
Thanks,

I found it very weird as well but all three of these games were purchased from the same visit (Microsoft makes you buy them individually).

The notifications I set up in PayPal specifically hoping to trigger them on the Sync card but it didn’t work until I used the Debit. As for the Sync notifications, they don’t kick in for instant alerts until $300 which is basically useless to me so I am very happy getting an instant email from PayPal for all of them.
Thank you for the link, I couldn’t find Kroger cards on Amazon and didn’t look elsewhere so I will check there. It looks like a Kroger site, do they code as signature? It sucks that they have PIN-less Debit now.
Well, looks like it was too good to last, just got this email this morning:
