Finally in with USAA-- but question

I have been a member of USAA forever, but have never qualified for ANY of their products.... until now! Smiley Happy

Last week, I applied at a few places to refinance my auto loan (currently with Logix). I was approved at a few places, so, just for giggles, I applied with USAA-- and they approved me!

My question is: now that I'm in with them (finally) with a loan (and once I let that age a bit)-- will they be more likely to approve me for one of their credit cards? Thus far, anytime I've applied for one, I get "Heck no! But you can have a secured card!"

Re: Finally in with USAA-- but question

They seem to be really tight. Its hard to say what they will and wont approve, but my understanding is that the "the computer" does all the decision making for them, there are no underwriters to look at your history with a human eye.

Over one year with them and 1 CC with a perfect payment record and they wont give me the time of day for anything, stating "excessive obligations" but PenFed and USBank have been extending me credit all month long for CCs and car loans.

I would say their debt (all debt) to income ratio is what their computer looks at the most.

Given my scores in the 760s, with no baddies ever, and they wont even consider me for a CLI of any amount, how they operate is pretty much a mystery.

You will also want to be careful, as any new application will also be a new HP from what I have found.

That's kinda what I figured.... We'll just wait a while and give it a go.

Re: Finally in with USAA-- but question

Out of curiousity, why do you want a USAA cc? They're not very competitive anymore. I opened an account years ago so that I could use online check deposit with their checking product. At the time you had to have a loan or line of credit with them to have this feature, so I applied for a credit card. I don't think that's true anymore. I still use the account once every six months to keep it alive, but I'm not sure why. Laziness I guess. I still use the online check deposit.

Amex Blue Cash Preferred (2x for $13k/yr) - 6% groceries (including GC), 3% gas, 1% everywhere else
US Bank - Cash+ (2x for 4 categories) 5% restaurants, department stores, wireless, and 1 rotating misc
Chase Amazon - 3% on amazon.com
Chase United - 2% on United/Star Alliance. Original "plat" card/grandfathered. Get 5k PQM/year.
Fidelity Amex - 2% (my main card)
Citi Double Cash - 2% (may become main card)
Fidelity Visa - 1.5% $15k, 2% > $15k/yr (sock drawer since Citi DC)
A few other EMV cards with 0% foreign exchange

Well, this information is back when I use to work for USAA which is going on 4 years ago:

USAA does have human underwriters, but they do not talk to the member. The underwriter only speaks to the frontline reps. When I was working there it use to be that we could go to the underwriter and basically speak in behalf of a member, not so much for denials, more so for credit line increases. That could have changed, but when I first started the underwriters were very lenient.... right before I quit they had become very strict.

And a car approval does not mean a credit card approval, sadly. The criteria for the credit card is much more strict.

I also agree that USAA does not have as good rewards compared to others. Generally, people who use the card are just loyal to the brand.

Re: Finally in with USAA-- but question

USAA has been very good to me recently!  I've been a member since 2011 (or 2010, can't remember) and initially I was only able to get a $1,000 cc from them. At the time my scores were pretty low and I had a few collection accounts on my reports. My reports are finally clean so I thought I would try for some other products with them. First I app'd for a $10,000 personal loan and was instantly approved. I used part of the loan money and paid down my cc's to less than 10% utility.  Once those payments posted I applied for the USAA Rate Advantage MC and was instantly approved for $16,000 at 7.9%. Smiley Very Happy  A few mins later I tried for the USAA AMEX and was instantly approved for another $16,000 at 12.9%. Smiley Very Happy All of this has taken place since 8/13/14! I know their rewards are not as good as some other companies but they have given me by far the best limits I have ever received.  My next highest is a AMEX BCE at $8,000.  If your scores have improved and your reports are clean I say go for it! This. I have their World Platinum Rewards MC and simply don’t use it anymore except for a few token purchases here and there to keep it current because its not competitive with the other products in my wallet, and that’s pretty much their top of the line card. That and with a 2K limit that they wont budge, I have outgrown the spending limit it imposes.

The card was nice for building up my credit, and a nice cash nest-egg, but I have moved on and they really can't compete with PenFed, my credit union.

That’s so odd, my relationship with USAA seems to be somewhat unique. They are by far my lowest CL with my average more than 15k and highest limits at 25k, I have great credit, no baddies, and even after a year of perfect PIF usage, they refused me for a CLI (3 times) 2 car loans, and a PLC which they sent me a letter telling me I was pre-approved for. Smiley Frustrated Meanwhile, PenFed hasn’t batted an eye for extending me all those same things, all off the same HP, which each request with USAA having generated a new HP.

The only thing I can think of is my monthly usage ratio on the card was too high (typically 50%+) even tho I PIF and have never paid a dime of interest. USAA is just odd! Smiley LOL

That is odd. Do you bank with them as well? I have my auto and renters insurance with them and I just recently started using them as my main bank (couldn't deal with Wells Fargo anymore). Maybe that has something to do with their recent generousity?

I don’t bank with them, that’s a good point, all I have is the one CC.

I simply haven't found that they are competitive at anything. I had planned to move my checking over to them after having the CC for a while and getting a higher CL, but the increase never happened and now I have moved on and do all my banking with PenFed.

I looked into their auto insurance a while ago which came highly recommended, but it simply wasn’t competitive. When I called to ask for a quote about 2 years ago, I had to tell the CSR that Geico, All State and even State Farm all were offering rates $100 lower per 6 months or more then they were for the same coverage. The CSR seemed embarrassed. Smiley Embarassed

I rent, but again, Liberty Mutual offered far better rates, by quite a large amount.
