For CC rewards, is heating oil considered a utility?

I was recently approved for a Barclay Rewards card that earns 2% on utilities and gas.  Living the Northeast, we use #2 heating oil to warm our home in the winter.  Typically, we pay cash.  It dawned on me that I could use my card and PIF while earning rewards.

Does anyone know if #2 heating oil would qualify as a utility or gas?

I called my oil company but they had no idea what I was talking about when I asked about credit card purchase categories.

I used to post my scores here. However, I'm prone to motion sickness and the ups and downs were nauseating.

It would work if you purchased the oil from a utility company. If you buy the heating oil from a gas station or retail store, then it will not count. It is directly related to the merchant code used in the credit card transaction.

Order fuel oil on the card and find out. You will get some reward and it is more than paying cash.
