Forced dynamic currency conversion in Bermuda

I was in Bermuda a couple months ago and used my card quite a few times. All of the times I used it, the machines charged me in US dollars instead of Bermudian dollars (BMD). The Ingenico machines at a few places I went to used the same application as the ones in the US. The receipts from each said "USD" and did not give me a choice after tapping my Apple Watch. One place I went to had handheld PAX machines and when I tapped my Apple Watch there the receipt said "BMD" but neither my Apple Watch nor my card statement acknowledged that the transaction was in Bermudian dollars. Both implied that it was in US dollars. Has anyone been able to avoid this dynamic currency conversion in Bermuda?

Standard advice is to use Amex which doesn't support this, but of course Amex has less international coverage so the places where you need to avoid this might not take Amex!  Flyertalk has a subforum, haven't checked if Bermuda is mentioned specifically.  Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) - FlyerTalk Forums
