A lot of people here never realized, never see that most gas stations hold big chuck $$$ on your credit card when you pump your gas outside.
Sometimes $100 or $99 and the most common one only $1. Today I check Discover card, they hold $150 for only $30ish gas for my car.
That's why I encourage people DO NOT - NEVER NEVER use your debit card to pump your gas outside.
gas
There's no problem with using a debit card short of the lost rewards. If someone only has $20 in their account for some reason it will only approve $20 worth for fuel. Getting fuel won't bounce your account simply by using a debit card.
Such unattended POS locations are also prime targets for card skimmers, especially since most gas stations have yet to switch to EMV-compliant equipment, making your cards extra vulnerable. Considering this, you should not be using a card that is directly tied to your funds like debit cards anyway, purely from a security standpoint.

+1 totally agreed!
@Creditplzwrote:
I’ve had Pilot hold $300 temporary hold from US Bank...
Not a issue if you have a card with a good limit and PIF
Wow. I never see $300 hold. I thought $150 is a lot already

My experiences are American Express and Discover for the large holds (guess they think I drive a semi-truck). Amounts often are $75 to $100. Never had a hold for other than $1 on MasterCard or Visa. As to Debit Cards ... use at your own risk ... for reasons I have never read they do NOT have the same protections as credit cards and losses can sure put your checking accounts in a disarray An add is that generally my Discover Card sees holds of $1 and the large holds (as discussed in this thread) seem to be at stations that also serve trucks and the traveling world (campers, RVs and the like) along major road ways and near truck stations.

I have had my Debit card info stolen past two years in a row from Gas Stations and chase has been very good to me about giving me my money back and then going after the other party.
After getting hit by a skimmer once, I always prepay inside now. I never use terminals that the general pubilic has access to. Thieves are everywhere.
Candidly, I've never yet had a problem with the card-skimming issue in my part of the country (metropolitan DC area/Northern Virginia), though I know it's a real problem in California; I suppose it varies from region to region. I buy pretty much all my gas locally at Costco during business hours when there's somebody on duty at the pump area and never have heard of them having problems with skimmers. Costco has signs on their pumps advising customers that holds might need to be placed on funds on their cards (and that those holds will be released instantly upon completion of a valid transaction), but I've never had a problem with same.
