Hello, My name is David and as you can see this is my first post and I am hoping you will be able to help me or put me on the right track for answers. Ok, so back in late 2008 I ran into some troubles and could not make my payments on 3 cards (20 years old, young and dumb I guess) two with bank of america and one with Amex. the one with Amex was for 2500 but I settled with the collectors for 1200. Now that I am a little wiser I realize it was very stupid letting it get to collections. What are the chances of me getting back to good standing with Amex? I mean, I would be willing to pay off the rest of the amount however, I know they no longer own it and it was sold to the collections. If there was anything I could do to correct this, I would. I am slowly starting to rebuild my credit and I was hoping a second chance would be possible. I apprecate any and all help.

Amex does forgive when debt is paid. I would suggest you call them up and speak to someone. Just a general question you could ask is do I owe you money? I do know someone who owed AMEX a few thousand dollars and when he called they transferred him to a certain department (can't remember name) and all he did was ask if he owed money. They asked for his full name and SS# and with-in a few minutes they gave him his balance, he paid it, waited about a month and applied for the gold card and was approved. He was previously turned down about 3 months prior.
Obviously YMMV depending on other criteria in your credit profile.

AMEX will forgive. You're blacklisted until you clear up the debt. Once it's cleared, they will remove you from the blacklist and approve you based upon your current scores, etc.
Starting Score: EQ: 468 - 2/2013
Current Score: EQ: 620, EX: 611, TU: 599 - 7/2013
Goal Score: 750's
You may already be forgiven with your settlement. Mine is still on my EX report (only thing left) and they approved me for 3 revolving cards this past year.
