I'd toss those mailers upon arrival.  They're bad news and of course their purpose is to get people to apply.  Any time someone applies for a credit card product IMO it should be thoroughly researched/planned first.  No one should ever apply for something impulse-style just because a mailer showed up in their mailbox.  If you decided that you wanted to apply for a specific CC product after doing your research on it and a mailer arrived around that time for that specific product, sure you could entertain responding to it.  That should be the exception though, where all other mailers find a comfortable spot in your trash can.

+1!    They are basically ads, things the CCC wants people to get   (note I include real true prequals in here too).  One of my favorite imperfect analogies, but it's like getting an ad for an auto (that you can afford) and then saying "OK, they sent me the mail so I will get this car" even if you weren't in the market for a car.

I understand that if  you are rebuilding, a preapproval may be welcome, but it still may not make sense to get it.  Look around for alternative cards that might suit better.
