Goodwill Letter - need advice

I just recently came across a little bit of money that I am going to use to pay off old credit card debt.  I have a copy of the GW letter that I want to send to these old CC companies so that I can boost my credit score and maybe pay a little less than what they are asking to pay this debt off.

My question is:  the GW letter I have seen posted on these sites state that you dispute the validity of the debt.  I am not disputing anything, I do know this debt is mine.  Am I still legally able to ask them to remove the debt once I pay it off, even though I know the account is mine?  I had someone who works in the CC business tell me that if you know the debt is yours, then legally they can't remove it from your credit file.  I am getting ready to send these letters out ASAP, so any advice right away would be a BIG help.  Thanks!

Also, if I pay them off, but they stay on my report, will it still help boost my credit score?

You want PFD for unpaid debt, not GW.
