Re: Help figuring out long-term card strategy?

It looks like my airport has some delta flights, just not non-stop and as many as southwest. But maybe it might be worth it to still get the Amex Green and just try to fly a different airport when I decide to use my points... You've given me a lot to think about!

Welcome to myFICO @gande96967.

If you can be loyal with Southwest for your flights, then app for that card from Chase.  Same holds true for the hotel- be it IHG, Hilton, Marriot etc.  If you will be travelling based on lowest cost, then a Venture/Sapphire Preferred makes sense.  Consider the new WF Autograph Journey as well.

Thanks, @NoMoreE46. Seems like my two best options are between the Amex Green (to be able to pair with the BCP) or start in with the Chase ecosystem by getting the Sapphire Preferred.

The Green should be no drama for an approval.

Keep in mind though that BCP/BCE are cash back programs while the Green and Gold are on a MR points system.  They are seperate programs as noted by @DakotaM .

I'd wait until your FICO scores are  > 700  if applying for anything outside of Amex.

Oh, so I can't convert my cash back into the membership rewards points? Then it might be worth it to have the Chase ecosystem for the travel for now so I can use it with Southwest. Sorry, I am very new to credit cards and trying to do my due diligence!

Re: Help figuring out long-term card strategy?

I have no experience with redeeming points for anything but cash. With usb, you can use points in their travel portal, I just cash them at cents per point.

If looking into a points ecosystem, don't forget venture X, much lower af. Id really be careful not to paint myself into a corner where I can't fly the most convenient airline.

As was already mentioned, if you stick with one hotel brand, you might get their card, they all have one. Example. amex has three hilton cards. These card rewards are in hotel points, good for hotel stays.  I got the white card, just for the sub. Right now, this card,

https://www.americanexpress.com/us/credit-cards/?intlink=us-en-hp-product1-personal-creditcards

Has a 130,000 point sub for $3000 spend in 6 months and no fee the first year.

Another thing, there are no amex mr points cards with no fee, but amex does offer a no fee, no min checking account that does mr points, so, if you get a fee card for the sub points you can park them there if you later cancel the card. They pay a sub to, but they want a large direct deposit to collect it.

If you want to do deposit account subs but don't have the direct deposit, there are ways of simulating DD by depositing from your own account.😁😁

@gande96967 - Sapphire Preferred is a lot better than Amex Green in my opinion. Part of the beauty of getting CSP or Venture is not having to do any transfers.

Correct.
One can redeem MR points as cash (a few ways) but one cannot convert  cash back into MR points.
