Help with Capital One - Multiple Cards

I would like some assistance with Capital One. Here's the short version. I kinda screwed up. I was approved in early November for a Platinum MasterCard, $3,000 starting limit. I applied for a second account the same week. $2,000 SL. I swore the second card I applied for was a Quick Silver but apparently not. I didn't necessarily want two Platinum MasterCard's. Lol.

I need a plan of attack here. I've researched relentlessly on the boards and you get mixed answers. Can I even apply for a Quick Silver if I already have 2 Platinums? If yes, how long should I wait? Should I attempt to combine accounts? Upgrade one of them? Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you...

Re: Help with Capital One - Multiple Cards

You can of course apply for the QS, but being that they already gave you two cards, they may deny you a third. Not only that, but you'll take another triple pull for the QS app. If anything I would wait at least 30 days, but again, no guarantees. My advice is to contact cap1 and explain what happened and see if they can PC one of your Platinum cards to a QS (preferably the $3k one). If they can't do that, I would show some responsible usage and try for a PC again after 2-3 statements pass. As far as combining your cards, you can do that, but you have to wait for them to both turn 6 months old and not have any pending charges. Even then, combining them won't have any effect as far as getting you a QS. It would merely roll the limits into one Platinum card.

Re: Help with Capital One - Multiple Cards

You can apply for a QS Visa if your profile supports it, sure. You can have up to 5 total cards but only 2 MasterCards so you will probably get denied if you try for a QS1.

What I would do is see if, in a couple months, they will upgrade one or both of your cards to a QuickSilver, as was previously advised.

Re: Help with Capital One - Multiple Cards

Here's a link to a thread that has the T&C's for the different levels of cards with Capital One, including how many of each type you can (generally) have:

http://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit-Cards/Maximum-Number-of-Cap-One-Cards-A-Guide/td-p/4368334

There will be folks who these rules will seem to not apply, just as occasionally you see somebody on here with a Venture MasterCard or a Quicksilver MasterCard (not QS1) - there are always outliers and exceptions - but for people applying fresh the "rules" listed should be a good guide.
