Are most cards monthly or one lump sum?

I think all "prime" lenders do it as a lump sum.

I was under the impression that some annual fees are broken up monthly for some cards. Is this the case at all, notable with AMEX charge cards?

One lump sum.

The Gold cards have first year AF waived correct?  Mine just renewed or will this month and I called in to see if I could get a retention offer to keep the card. I ended up getting a statement credit equal to the AF after some negotiations. The credit will not post for a couple of cycles (or so the rep said) but that's still cool with me. It worked, I am keeping the card but I never said I would use it.

If anyone is debating getting a card that has an AF and the amount of the fee is an issue it's probably not the right card for that person no matter how you break the reward math down to justify.
