I will hang on to receipts for major purchases but for most everything else they only have a limited time before they are shredded.
Most of our receipts end up in the recycle bin or the shredder. But, I have this cool app on my smartphone called "CamScanner" which I use to take pictures of the receipts that I want to keep. You can put them into .pdf and you can even put several receipts into one .pdf if you want, and then you just send an email to yourself from your phone. I did this recently in order to submit a reimbursement claim to our flexible spending TPA at work as they have a website for submitting your claims online.
At the beginning of each month I put the month and year on an envelope.
I put all my CC receipts in the envelope then at the end of the month seal it up and put it with the others.
Ive got a box of them at this point.
I may start burning some of the older ones.
I guess I'll just ask it straight out: how many of you dedicated receipt savers actually need the receipts at any point post purchase?

Do you do this for your personal expenses or just your business ones?
I guess I'm a slacker: I don't see any point to keeping my personal ones unless it's something I can deduct (which is few and far between for me these days).
Mainly for business deductions just in case those are the years requeted by the IRS auditors.
For my personal stuff, I keep them only long enough to ensure i don't need to return or exchange the item. However, these days, most places where I buy things don't even require a physical receipt.

Hm, aside from audits, I've never needed them.

is the app for iphone or do they have a Blackberry version? That sounds like a cool app!

+1. They go away that day. Only exception are biz-related receipts and I toss those in a big blue bin and organize those whenever I can. At the end of the year they remain loose in a box and is sealed after taxes.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S II (android phone), but I just googled the CamScanner app and yes, it is available for iPhone - here's the link for it:

And, if you need it for Blackberry you can go here: http://www.mobihand.com/532/product.asp?id=172030
It's a great app - I love it.
