How does a BT request affect your application?

If you apply for a credit card, are you better off asking for the BT at the same time? Or waiting until you have been approved, then doing the BT?

Re: How does a BT request affect your application?

I would love to find out more about that too I wonder if you ask for a BT at time of app if It may impact an approval decision or not, also if a BT at the time of app may help determine your CL in addition to the amount of the BT. Just thinking may not have anything to do with it at all. Good post though.

Re: How does a BT request affect your application?

It looks to me like asking for a BT helps in both areas. I've seen more reports about greater CL's, because the CCC is delighted to have you do this, hoping that you won't pay it off before the promo period ends, and then they can make some bucks off of you. Smiley Wink Also, if they're like BofA and don't cap their balance transfer fee, they get a nice 3% right off the top.

The evidence isn't quite so strong about acceptance, mostly people speculating that it helped. But I know I've never seen a post that someone was told that they were accepted and then declined once they asked for a BT. Doesn't mean it hasn't happened, though.

Remember that if you do a BT, you should go dig a hole in the backyard, put your new unused card in an empty coffee can, and bury it until the BT is paid off. In almost all cases, CCC's apply any payments to the balances with the lowest APR's. So if you have a $5K BT at 0%, and you go buy something for $1K at a purchase APR of 8.99%, that $1K will sit there and collect interest while all your payments go to the 0% BT. (DH learned this the hard way.)

That's exactly what I did with my Citi Dividend Amex card. I transfered all outstanding balances to it, ~2.6k. It got 15 months 0 percent on BTs, and it resides in the sock drawer until it's paid off.

Re: How does a BT request affect your application?

I don't think the BT affects approvals either way, but it does seem to affect CL. BTs do get you higher CLs. I wondered about BT on apps.

It can be looked at both ways. Need to transfer looks like you can't pay off, and need to transfer is more profitable to new lender... 50/50%.

Re: How does a BT request affect your application?

When I app'd for my Discover, I called and spoke to a CSR before I submitted online. I asked if filling out the BT info would help my application, and she told me that yes - it would. It would show them that I am interested in making my Discover my "go-to" card. I initially app'd for a $2K BT because I didn't want to max out my card. When they approved me for $9600 CL, I called immediately and increased my BT.

Re: How does a BT request affect your application?

Interesting - with Bank of America you actually can chat online to a 'counselor' before applying for a card. I asked this question - they said it would have no influence on whether I would be accepted or not. I should have asked if it would affect my potential credit limit.
