How long would you wait before requesting product change?

I've had an AMEX Delta Gold with a pretty high credit limit ($13K) since last October.  I just got an AMEX BCP in mid-April.  I'd like to lose the Delta Gold before the annual fee comes due.  It feels redundant since I have also have a CSP, and also isn't really serving its purpose (for example, I just found out I couldn't use miles to purchase theatre tickets like I thought because they limit that aspect of the rewards program to Medallion members... bummer).

What's the common wisdom on number of days to wait after opening a new account with AMEX before requesting a product change?  I'm thinking I'll either ask to be switched to another card without an annual fee or - preferably - ask to have at least the majority of the CL transferred to the BCP and just cancel the Delta Gold entirely.

Starting Score: 732 (EQ)
Current Score: EQ 08 - 837! Whoo!! (5/14/14);EQ 04 - 795! (5/15/14) 748 (TU - 5/21/12); 760 (EX - 4/16/12 AMEX pull)
Original Goal Score: 760+ EQ --> decimated!
New Goal Score: Just keep swimming...

If the card isn't suiting you, I don't see why you need to wait any amount of time.  I'd just call and ask what you are eligible to transfer to.

Most creditors will make you wait at least 12 months before they will do a PC ~ the CARD act explicitly forbids changing AFs in the first year, so many creditors will say that it prevents them from allowing a change.

YMMV, but I think that AMEX tells people to wait 13 months before PC, but it's worth a call to them to try IMO.

I believe the card act is to prevent from going no annual fee to annual fee... Not sure since you have annual fee if that opens you to PC to a card that has no annual fee before the 1 year mark or not... If it does prevent, it's 13 months for Amex.

but Amex is fabulous with PC and reps just go to a certain screen and it brings up a list for them of what you can move too... call up, if not possible you will be on the phone for 2 minutes!

Re: How long would you wait before requesting product change?

Well, I just tried and... nope.  The CSR called it a "reallocation", but the person who told me it was denied called it a CLI.  I'm guessing they put it through as a CLI request on the BCP, which would likely be automatically denied since it was opened so recently.  I should know in 7-10 business days when the letters comes.  Possible silver lining:  Maybe I'll get an updated Experian FICO out of the deal?

On the up side, I did find out that my BCP was backdated.  Smiley Happy

Well at least you gave it a shot.   At it will only be a soft pull, so that's a win, and like you said maybe a FICO too  Smiley Wink

And congrats on the backdating too !
