How to answer this recon question?

Why do you have so many new credit card accounts, 5-6 total, opened recently?

Re: How to answer this recon question?

Not looking for debts, but to build a thick credit file/portfolio. I have all of those accounts opened within 5 months is because I want all the inquiries to fall off at the same time.

Re: How to answer this recon question?

Just be honest and don't sugarcoat thinks excessively. These analysts hear all kinds of fancy touching stories on a daily basis and they catch onto bs right away, and they know when customers are applying for credit just to pad utilization, which is kinda a stupid tactic in the first place.

Just be really honest. For example, you were greedy and applied for too many cards, just admit it. It's not big deal since the most important concern to them is that you are managing your finances well and that you won't default.

Don't think I heard it phrased that way before....

Re: How to answer this recon question?

Haha yea I prefer just being really straightforward and honest, which I suppose can be somewhat refreshing, maybe. It worked once on chase EO, while the 2nd time I got an educational speech from the same person about how 5-7 cards is more than enough for most people and that I should go easy on the apps.

I was tempted to app for the Hyatt and/or Hilton card then too, since I am planning to stay at Hilton in Hawaii for bout 15 nights next month and then I have a 1 month trip planned in Japan and Korea in feb where I can make use of the Hyatt card. Got to wait I suppose. Ended up using my CSP for everything.

Re: How to answer this recon question?

I told Bank of America when talking to them about the Fidelity Amex (granted you could tell she didn't care that much and wasn't huge stickler but she did have to ask why so many INQ's)

I said we had opened a few accounts for 0% and a couple bank accounts, etc. and had now really narrowed down who we planned to do business with and where our money was going to be parked and unfortunetily we figured that out a couple apps and banks later then needed! truthful and she liked it... Left Fidelity at #1 which is what they always want to hear.
