How to decide which category the purchase will fall into?

I think it is important to know that before purchase since we need choise which CC to using. Is there a way to know that info without purchased before?

Gonna buy a iphone from apple.com, i am not sure which category will fall into by using Citi CC.

Citi CC mark newegg.com as ELECTRONIC STORE, that is 5% cash back this seaons, big saving.

Thanks and happy xmas

That would be nice to know. I just bought the DW an iPhone 4s, but I ended up putting it on AmEx to see if I get extra warranty.

Re: How to decide which category the purchase will fall into?

1 - Call your card's CS number and get to someone that knows what they are doing.

2 - Have them find the desired merchant (assuming you have made a purchase from them before) on a current or previous statement

3 - Have them tell you the merchant category code (MCC) of the merchant

4 - Look it up here:  http://www.irs.gov/irb/2004-31_IRB/ar17.html

5 - See if it matches a category for which your CC company gives you extra points, cash back, or whatever.

You can also try asking the merchant, but unless it is someone in their business department that helped setting up the merchant account, no one is likely to know.

Make sure to call the same company who's card you plan to use. I've seen it happen where the same company will have two different MCC's between a Visa card and AMEX.

Cards: CitiForward for Students (2K, opened 8/2009), Discover it (2K, opened 7/2010), AMEX BCE (1k, opened 12/2010), Capital One Quicksilver (4.5k, opened 11/2011), Chase Freedom (1.5k, opened 8/2014)

AMEX Platinum (NPSL, AC arrangement, added 12/2011), Citi AAdvantage AMEX (9k, AU, backdated to 9/2008)

Scores: TU 667, EQ 651

In the Garden since 8/8.
