Hello! I am hoping this wonderful group of people might be able to assist me in getting setup to utilize this quarter's cashback rewards with my Discover card.
I would like to take advantage of using PayPal to earn the 5%, plus this is my first year with them so I get the 5% match however I am not really an online shopper so I am trying to figure out how to maximize the cash back I earn in store, mostly for gas.
I just set up a PayPal account and need to somehow link my Discover card to it, correct? I am an android user and believe I read that I need to use Google Pay or Samsung Pay at contactless retailers? I have never used either of those so this is all new territory for me.
If anyone can help me get started it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! 😀
@Anonymous If I remember right, In the PayPal app (or website) you'll need to add your Discover card as a method of payment. Then make sure PayPal defaults to your Discover card (and not your PayPal balance, PayPal credit line or card, nor your bank account). Whenever you pay with PayPal, the charge will generate a transaction with Discover and then your 5%. I think that's right. Good luck!

While you can add Paypal to Samsung or Google Pay, it links the cash balance (which can then be automatically topped up from a bank account or DEBIT card), so I am not sure you can link it to Discover for in store purchase. Hopefully someone will show us how!
For online use, I just link my Paypal Key card to Discover for this quarter for recurring payments, but that's not what you are after!
I just set up my discover for paypal a few days ago and already used it twice. its easy, just go to your paypal account and add your discover card to payment accounts. then make sure you make discover the default payment option. i mainly use paypal on ebay but some retailers like home depot accept it. i never saw a gas station accept it.

Yes! The PayPal Key "Mastercard debit card" makes it much more useful for 5% cashback with Discover July 1 thru Sept. 30. Log in to your PayPal account and click on PayPal Key and link to to your Discover card for the payment source. It generates a Mastercard "debit" card number with expiration date & security code that use can be used as payment source anywhere MC is accepted.
I buy most of my groceries at Walmart. I have a Walmart store card for 2% cashback but just changed the Walmart Pay app to the PP Key MC as default payment for 5% cashback; if I swiped my Disco card I'd only get 1%. And I pay my mortgage payment thru Plastiq. I use my PayPal 2% MC, so it costs me a few bucks over Plastiq's fee, but then that got me a $12,500 credit limit on it, so I'll spare the couple bucks it costs me. But I just scheduled my Aug. 1 payment using the PP Key MC for a couple months' profit instead.
I've successfully used my PayPal Key with brick and mortar stores that accept payments via their own app.
So far, for me that's been Walmart Pay, Sam's Club "Scan & Go", and Kroger Pay. Many of the fuel apps take PayPal, and for those that don't the PayPal Key should be able to be added like any other MasterCard.
There is no feasible way to link Google Pay / Samsung Pay / PayPal / Discover, for contactless payments. The limitation is Paypal wanting to use PayPal cash / Bank account. It's best to use the alternatives already listed here.
Thank you all for your responses!
I guess I will try buying gas gift cards on one of the online sites that accepts PayPal.
