Tried applying for the Hilton Aspire and got the popup saying:
You are not eligible to receive the welcome offer.
In determining eligibility, we considered your history with credit card balance transfers,
your history as an American Express Card member, the number of credit cards that you have opened and
closed and other factors
I've never had this card, never really used Amex for BTs, have only 3 revolvers at the moment (2 charge and 1 corporate charge), and haven't really closed anything. I used to have a Citi Hilton Honors card that got product changed to the Hilton Surpass many years ago which I closed, but that shouldn't really be affecting anything.
The only thing I can think of is I have a current application pending for a Biz Plat that is awaiting approval, which I apped for a week ago.
Anyone know what could be up with this?

it's called pop-up jail, and it's simply related to Amex's computer deciding if it would be in their best interest to give you the bonus or not
it's like Cap1's 'for good credit' cards, the card without the bonus
nobody knows how you get out or how long it might take, but a few things it could be:
currently on a SUB
recently had a SUB
too many recent SUBs
too little spend
closing cards
opening cards
try different referral links/offers, you may be in jail for one offer, but not for a lesser/different offer
not performing the ancient myfico amex ritual of posting three approval threads back to back to back (it could be for any reason, even reasons you have no control over like market conditions)
they likely would be willing to give you the card without the SUB, but you give up the chance to ever get that SUB
tldr: if you want the bonus, spend on your amex cards, don't open/close new cards, and keep trying different offers at a hopefully 'not suspicious' pace

You sig has 3 CC and 3 Charges.
If you closed them and used them just for the SUB, no soup for you.
It's what you might have done in the past that will effect the future with Amex SUBS
Glad to know the reasons are as nebulous as ever! I only ever closed cards with Amex to make room for other cards, so I don't think the SUB-and-close should be an issue (at least hopefully not). I've just now been approved for that Biz Plat so perhaps the SUB in progress is preventing an SUB on this card. Will try to finish that first!
Congrats on the 1 approval. You can post that in the Approval Section. Keep us updated on the second card. Apping for another card before the first one was completed may have thrown a wrench in the process.
