Interesting Barclays/Wyndham card closing experience

So I just started my pruning of annual fee cards I am not keeping and the wyndham card was the first on the list.  Called in and cancelled over the phone without talking to a human at all. It was 100% automated voice. Was very easy though.

Main 2/6 3/12 4/24

Finishing SUB then closing since the nerf happened

The last time I cancelled a Barclays card, it was also through the automated voice response system.  No person ever came on the line to try to talk me out of leaving.

Same thing when I cancelled my Savor card before the second year AF hit (first year AF was waived).

I'm surprised they make it so easy.  I would think they'd have a human make at least a modest retention attempt.

I actually prefer the easy method and not having to deal with someone trying to convince me to keep the card.

Certainly when I really want to cancel a card that would be great. If I'm just looking for a little something to sweeten the deal to keep an AF card then it is still good to have the option to talk to someone although automated retention offers (ala Sirius radio) would be good too.

It's been a few years but Amex really battled to keep me from closing a card last time I tried. I've got a couple Amex cards I plan to close over the next year before the new, higher AF hits and would love to be able to do it without talking to someone.

Amex has been inconsistent for me.  When I called to close my Amazon Business Prime card, I was routed to a real person who spent quite a long time asking about my reasons for closing the card.  She also wanted my opinions regarding my other Amex cards versus the cards I was currently using from other financial institutions.  That was probably the best retention call I've ever had, and it made me feel like my opinions were valued.

On the other hand, I got the automated IVR system when I called to close my Delta Gold card.  No people involved.

Delta Gold is one of the cards I intend to close but the AF doesn't hit until December and I have at least one DL flight before then so it will be a while. I hope my experience matches yours.
