I input the hhonors number when I book a room. My reservation is then coded as Diamond Member. All my perks are ready when I walk in the door. I don't have to tell them anything or flash a card. I go to the HHonors counter. They know I'm coming so they have my upgrade assigned to me. I get whatever amenities the hotel offers. Free internet, free breakfast, exec lounge access, turn down/refresher, access to fitness center. Depends on the hotel. The "official" policy is that you can choose between extra points or the free stuff. I always get both because I'm such a sweet person.
VIPs are usually issued a gold cardkey instead of the standard key. Sometimes you have to flash that to gain access to the exec lounge and you may need that key to access the limited access floors where they keep all the goodies.
