Late Payment..Dangit

Have not had a late CC payment in 5+ yrs. Was away for 2 weeks in the middle of nowhere, had no cell phone signal, no internet access, no tv, nada. That's what I needed. But- I forgot about my newest CC statement date. I had requested a change in statement date to coincide with the others but it hasn't gone into effect yet. All my good intentions of setting up auto-pay never came about.

I got back yesterday and remembered the account, logged on, and discovered I was 2 days late.

So, I'll get hit with a late fee.

Is this enough for them to rate-jack me?

Why don't you call them and plead your case? ONLY 2 days late is not that bad.

But I'll bet there are some ccc's out there that would classify you to default rate. Probably depends on the ccc, history with them, etc etc etc.

Just my opinion.

I'd get on the phone ASAP and plead for (a) no rate jacking (b) no late fee (c) no 30 day late report to the CRAs. Sounds like you have a good case. ("Suddenly, I found myself canoeing down the Amazon ...")

I did the same with Home Depot in June - the date changes on that card & has been everything from the 4th till 11th - no ding on my CRs.

Usually, if you pay by the time the statement cuts - no ding (you will have late fees however) That's when I started making the min payment via billpay just after the statement cuts (never late - and have to fix any transmittal error). I adjust util just before the payment date and then stop using the card until it reports which is theStatement date for most CCs with the known exception of HSBC (got me this month though because I didn't know they report the last business day of the month) - I can fix that next month.

Personally, I would pay the late fee and see if they rate-jack you then try to negotiate - no sense in creating a problem. Usually it isn't considered 30 days late unless you really are 30 past due (i.e. next payment's due date.

CCC's will usually give you a courtesy waived fee every 12 months (chase excluded). Just call, ask nicely. You should be OK.

Thanks for the advice. The card is HSBC. My online statement shows they have already charged a $30 late fee.

I'll call this week & see if anything can be done.

Just banging my head on the table for forgetting to pay this.

HSBC - will not report you late.

Might have put a damper on a CLI off for 6 months.

Thanks. I asked them to please waive the fee via online customer service. Just checked my email, they are going to remove the late fee.

Yep. I lucked out this time. Have got to setup auto-pay. When I first came to this site I had 2 CC, now have 5, it's become more difficult for my aging brain cells to cope with.
