The first name I use every day, which everyone knows me by causally and professionally, is different from my legal name on my birth certificate, drivers license and passport. Two letters on the end of my first name are different, phonetically giving me a different name. I have been contemplating legally changing it for many years. I have medical records, prescriptions, medical/dental insurance, etc all under this name. I've never app'd for CCs using that name though and I'm about to begin. Is this a bad idea without legally changing my name?

Some banks like American Express you can have what ever you want on card as name but the application would show your legal name.
I usually take out my middle initial or middle name but completely changing the name "May" not be issue with credit card because that info of your credit report will show the variations so once it's in there, other applications may pick it up and accept or throw a flag to look at...
HOWEVER if you don't change with Drivers License and what not if you get your car towed, you might find it hard to get it out!!!
My AMEX has my first and middle name intial and full last name. My CSP has first name initial and full last name.
Not sure if I like it because my last name is only 3 letters and it looks a little odd. Also for secondary ID purposes it might not fly
