I have been dragged out of the garden due to Huntington Bank messing around with the Voice’s grocery category in 2023, which was a quiet 3% Walmart category and is now very unreliable. I also have a gap in my lineup with Warehouses/Wholesale clubs.
Current Active Lineup: Amex Blue Cash (3% Online/Supermarkets), Discover It (5% rotator), Citi Double Cash (2%), Chase Freedom Unlimited (3% restaurants), Citi Custom Cash (5% Gas, becomes a hotel card when rarely needed).
Huntington Voice when it worked was my 3% Walmart Card (Counted as Grocery). This could be repositioned in my lineup, TBD.
Scores: 800+ across the board with one pull in the last two years.
I’m trying to avoid cards with annual fees as while I do spend, I don’t spend enough for fees. Also primarily looking for cash back/rewards cards.
Cards I’m primarily thinking about: (Primary Goal Walmart Card, Seconday Goal Warehouse Card)
Venmo Visa - Looking at this card for both the Walmart/Grocery coding and it’s use at Warehouses, which I have a gap in my lineup. I’m not concerned about the high APR’s, I pay my bill in full each time.
NIHFCU Visa Signature Cash Rewards - I like this for the Wholesale Clubs, and the overlap in Gas.
Possible options:
AAA Daily Advantage - I have not done a deep dive on this one yet, but would be interested in anyone’s experience as I'd primilary use it for Warehouses.
Also Investiagting:
Target Mastercard - I don’t do the most shopping here as we don’t have any local locations, but I like the free shipping and 5% back features they are offering. I've done more shopping here at times in the last year, but it's very seasonal.
I’m open for suggestions and other experiences with these cards.
I have the AAA Daily Advantage. I've really only used it for the 5% on groceries. Since it is a Visa, it should work without problems for the 3% back in all warehouse stores. Keep in mind that there is a combined $10,000 max in spend for the elevated categories. It is backed by Comenity, who seems to give out rather high limits. Comenity had a prolonged system meltdown a while ago, but I was never affected. I got a $9,400 starting limit with them despite app spree carnage in the preceding months. Apparently, you can only redeem the cashback as a credit to the account and only if if your statement balance is above that. For example, I have about $10 in rewards that I can't redeem right now because my last statement balance was $0.
Another option I have that is really like is the Redstone Signature Visa. It is a pretty new card from Redstone credit union. I believe anyone can join with ACC (Edit:Financial Fitness Association; thanks AndySoCal!) membership. It is 5% back on groceries and restaurants, and 3% on groceries, discount stores, warehouse stores, and utilities. It has a separate $7,000 cap on all those categories, which is awesome!
The Walmart and Target superstores are supposed code as discount stores whereas the neighborhood market variants should code as groceries. This is variable of course, but the ability to get 3% no matter which one a particular location decides to classify itself as is great. I have yet to use it at warehouse stores, but since it is a Visa again, you shouldn't have any issues.
Apparently Redstone starts everyone at a $5,000 starting limit and since it is a new card, no one really knows about the growth potential. I don't think Redstone has a statement credit option, so I have to redeem toward the attached savings account. The minimum to redeem is only $5 and autoredemption is easy to setup. The redemption process takes 2 or 3 days to go through.

@mwarmor I would suggest for Target is to get the debit card you still receive the 5% discount and the shipping does not change
@DakotaM Redstone FCU you are not able to join using the ACC it is not listed in the associatons you can select for membership eligibility. The NIHFCU you are able to join with membership in the ACC (American Consumer Council)
FWIW In the Personal Finance section. I have created a list of credit unions you can join with membership in the ACC.

I have the AAA Travel Advantage, which is just like the Daily Advantage except that Daily gives you 5% cashback on groceries while the Travel gives you 5% cashback on gas and ev charging. A very good card. Of course the only question for you is whether Walmart groceries will code as a grocery store.

@AndySoCal Thanks for the correction 👍. I actually joined Redstone through the Financial Fitness Association, a similar organization to the ACC, hence my conflating them. Restone is one of those credit unions that provides an easily accessible list of all the eligible organizations, which is really nice.

@mwarmor , can you please summarize your exact request/question. You are looking for a card(s) that is 3% CB or higher in-store for Walmart, and 3% or higher at warehouse/wholesale? Or something else? Thanks.
@SouthJamaica
AAA I'd be aming more towards the Warehouse option, thanks for your input!
@ptatohed
Sorry for my lack of clarity.
1. Walmart would be priority.
2. Warehouses would be nice.
3. Have no problem signing up for two cards at once to achieve.

Ok @mwarmor , so 3 - 5% at WM, in-store? I know (or I think?) you mean in-store only but I'm sure you are aware of the Cap One WM Rewards MC for 5% on-line (includes pickup). I use this card all the time. Also, the Chase Freedom Flex MC pretty consistently adds WM to Q4 of each year for 5%. And I 'think' (not 100% sure on this) you can checkout in-store at WM with PayPal and, thus, get 3% with the PayPal CB MC. Otherwise, I don't know how to regularly get 3%+ in-store at WM short of being grandfathered in to the 3% everything AOD Visa signature. You can try cards that are better than 2% everything such as the 2.5% Alliant Visa Sig. Now, if your WM always codes as groceries (mine does not), that opens up a new world to you and you can explore options such as the 6% US Alliance Visa Sig (6% groceries possibly ending at the end of this year but I wouldn't be surprised if they extend it). Or, of course the good ol' citi Custom Cash for 5% if used only for groceries. Etc.
As for warehouses, I won't rehash all the work great work that @PullingMeSoftly did on THIS THREAD here, I'll just suggest you look it over. ![]()
Best of luck my friend! Keep us updated! ![]()

I'm in store at Walmart and mine does code as Grocery at least to one of my cards (that being the Huntington card I'm having issues with.) I'm going to have a chance to test the Custom Cash Grocery here in July, I might do that...
I'm going to check out that Warehouse thread, I had not seen that before. Thanks!
@mwarmor Depending on how long have had your card Walmart pay might be an option
https://www.walmart.com/cp/walmart-pay/3205993
Custom cash will not work at my Walmart Supercenter it is coded as a Discount Store not Grocery. This may cause problems with other cards as well
