I was only joking, sort of. I don't really see any downside to having huge CLs. I don't ever plan on spending 40K on a card or even 5K. I suppose if I were to buy a replacement Ferrari engine for the 308GTB I could charge it to get reward points, but I don't need one right now. Assuming there isn't some dream card out there that you may get declined for due to having too much available credit, I don't know why one wouldn't get the highest CLs they could obtain.

That is indeed the problem, or even just a good card.  At a certain point, you may stop getting automatic approvals, especially with a issuer you have a lot of credit with, and in some cases you get declined anyway.   As you run into more of these issuers, the attraction of going from X times income to 1.5X times income seems less!

Re: Maximizing CL with NO MORE CARDS!

longtimelurker,

Is this a real problem that people encounter? I know AMEX has the in house 35K ceiling, but even that can easily be broken through with document submission. It seems as though if you carry large CLs with most of the major card issuers you could just PC to a new program if one suited you and you were maxxed out with available credit from them. I am nowhere near those levels, I hope. I am very interested in this since receiving a 40K CL from Diners Club, I am not wanting to be denied CLIs and new accounts in the future on my other cards just because I have one whopper. I was assuming it would have the opposite effect and encourage larger CLIs going forward.
