I returned some slacks to Bloomingsdale's yesterday and the money is due to go back to amex. Yesterday was also the last day of that billing cycle. When the credit hits my account in the next few days will that credit be applied to the statement that just closed or will it just be put on the new statement that starts today? I was kinda hoping the credit would be applied to the statement that closed yesterday.

If a statement has already closed, then it's too late to add any transactions to it.

The credit will show on your next month's statement, and if you have a minimum payment due from your last statement, you'll still need to make that payment.
