Hi all,
I have a Military Star card that reports on my credit report. It is my oldest account dating back to 2002. The balance is $0, and it shows as open on my reports. The last update reflecting from it was in 2008 though. Here are my questions.
I would really like to get a new card sent to me and make some purchases from AAFES online to update the TL. I am an honorably discharged veteran, so I do have access to buy online. However, I do not have access to apply for a new STAR card. This is only available to retired vets. I don't remember when I seperated if I had to close this account, or what AAFES does on their end. I think it has just been left open from the credit report saying that, but anyone know exactly what is going on here? I have tried researching with no luck. Is it even a possibility they will send me a new card if I call, or will I just be told that I am no longer eligible. The last thing I want to do in this situation is have them report the account closed on my reports if I have no chance at a new card.
The other thing I would like to know is when will this TL naturally fall off my report? Remember it is reflecting open on credit report, but it also was last updated in 2008. Is it possible this account just always stays on my report if AAFES never closes it? Does it silently leave after 10 years of no new updates?
Thanks guys appreciate any help ![]()
Why dont you just call them and ask?
or
Can you check your account online and if so, what does it say your available balance is?
I'm worried that the account may be set as closed on my CR if I call. This account is my oldest account like 15 years. So don't want to risk shooting myself in the foot unless I know the risk is worth it. Does that make sense?
I never had an online account. Not sure what info I need to create one, and I have no clue on my account info. Will try to create one and see. Hopefully I have some old document with the account info if I need that. The credit reports say my balance is $0, which is correct. I remember paying it all before separating. I just don't remember anything else.
You will be able to shop online, being honorably discharged. Stop by https://www.vetverify.org and register. They pull the verification/character of discharge, and bam your good to go. Thank you for your service from a Veteran(AF) to a Veteran!!
Also your Starcard is still good to use, and you can shop as you'd like, albeit online, and not on base/post.
EDIT: Once I registered at the site mentioned, I logged onto AAFES with the same user/pass I had while I was in. I didn't have to re-register an account.
Thanks for the response.
Sadly this is not working out how I hoped. I called them this morning, and they told me my card was closed Jun 2017. The CSR said there was no way to reactivate the old account since it went into a closed state. Only if this new veteran benefit went into effect last year lol.
I'm guessing the TL will update as closed eventually, and will drop off my report. Can anyone please let me know how that works. Will it fall off 10 years after updated to closed? Will it fall after 10 years after the last payment update (was 2008). Feels bad my AAoA is going to plummet when this TL leaves.

A closed card can drop off your reports at any time at the discretion of the original creditor but in the vast majority of cases, they will stay on your reports for 10 years or longer. During that time they will continue to age and be reflected in your Average Age of Accounts
