Heh, glad I didn't jump on that train !
I did jump on the Diners Club and BBVA, both have served me well ![]()
@Gmood1 wrote:That's a bummer! I have my NASA Card setup with a recurring bill.
As I do all of the CC's that I want to keep. I also have an automatic monthly deposit in place for my NASA savings account.
Sorry to read of your troubles.
I do the same...
@robbulous wrote:Hello all,
Wanting to let everyone know that NASA FCU abruptly closed my credit card with them. To give some back story, I've had the card about a year and a half. I got it during the NASA craze that happened awhile back.
Back then instantly approved me for a $30,000 credit line at 7.9%. My FICO score was a 780 with 1% utilization.
Fast forward to today, my FICO score is 750 with 5% credit utilization. There is nothing new on my credit report that should have spooked them. I think they may be shutting down accounts opened during the craze and that have been barely used.
I disputed the closure with the collections manager, and she said after further review the account would not be reopened because I already had high credit limits on other credit cards. Sounds ridiculous to me. NASA thinks that if you have enough credit elsewhere, they don't need to bother with you. Talk about jealous in the worst way. I also opened 2 new accounts in the last year.
One thing I think may have been a factor is that I only ever had a high balance of $20 over the year and a half of having the card.
Just a warning to those of you with NASA cards to be careful with them as they seem to be even more jealous than Barclays.
The account now shows up on my credit report as closed, with a note: "account closed by credit grantor."
Will this have adverse effects on my other accounts?
Hi there, sorry to hear about your closure.
The possible trigger I can see is what you said about your utilization. 5% now, grown from 1% when you applied. You have a massive amount of credit (great CLs!), so that 5% is like $11k isn't it?
Their algorithms probably saw the 30-point FICO drop, plus the $11k unsecured debt, and sent a popup to the risk management department. A number of people seem to have aroused banks' suspicions when reaching 5-digit debt balances.
One thing to note - the missing CL will raise your overall utilization a bit. So you might try to get some CLIs on your other cards to cushion it.

BBVA sure seems to take a long time to process purchases so that you can pay them. And they take a long time to process points redemptions.
I just checked, and my 6145 point redemption request was finally posted. However, they credited my account for only $61.00 so I still owe 45 cents. Gee, that could cause fees if I hadn't noticed it... I wonder how that could have happened...
NASA just closed my 25K card too for the same reason.
I got it during the NASA craze. Sure does suck because I liked that utilization buffer, but I don't have extremely high UTL so I'm not worried.
Good to hear that it shouldn't cause a domino effect with my other CCs.

WOW. So sorry to hear about another NASA closure. They are the only CU I have seen that is closing cards for "too much available credit on other cards". SO glad they denied me. ![]()
