NFCU HELP!!!

Hello,

I've been following this board for a LONG time but never really needed to ask anything until today!

I've been a member of PenFedCU for several years and just tried to get a car loan but they would not appove me based on the fact that I have not had any new accounts recently and my utilization.

My true FICO score through EQ is 735!!

I have 1 chase card (AU) 5k/25k 1Discover card(AU) 1k/10k 1capone card 250/300  1Imagine card 500/1k

No lates collections or anything else!!

65k/yr income with 3yrs on the job...

Anyways I was trying to find another CU to join ( Simply because CU's are the people that use EQ ONLY my other scores are not nearly as good)

I was reading from this forum about NFCU I would really like to join them.

But in my family the only people in the millitary are my cousin (served in the first Gulf war) and my grandfather. Both of them are on my dead abusive father's side of the family and honestly I have not talked to that side since my fathers death 10 yrs ago. I would like to keep it that way as well...

I actually work for the University Hopsital here but I don'tknow if that would be considered a non-government health services job or what. (you can choose that when you try to join)

Does anyone have any insight on how I could join? Is it true you can have a local sponsor? I am willing to pay or anything to join!! I am in desperate need of a car!! ( I can not afford a 18% interest rate though, which is what I was offered when they pull multiple CRs)

Please I don't want to offend anyone I am just wondering if anyone can help or knows how to help or even if I can join as a non-government member.

Re: NFCU HELP!!!

I know that you've asked for help in finding an eligibility avenue with NFCU, but if that doesn't work out, perhaps you can try Alliant. Before you do so, however, you might want to pay your two non-AU cards (Cap1 & Imagine) down to less than 9% utilization, or better yet... to zero (since both of your AU cards are reporting a balance), and let that report. The reason that I say this is that the score is only one aspect of a decision to grant credit. PenFed is a super prime lender-- they'd note that your two highest limit cards are AU, and that you're maxed out one of your two own cards, and over 50% on the other. The manual review will be just as, or more meaningful than the score itself.

Do you have any other loans (student loans, auto loans, mortgage etc...)? Your debt to income ratio will play a role as well. If you can fix your utilization situation I think you'd have a solid chance with Alliant, if the recent trends (as reported in this forum) holds true. You may not get an automatic approval (but, then again, you might!), but they seem pretty eager to gain new business.

Much luck to you, and keep us posted!

Re: NFCU HELP!!!

The ONLY eligibility for NFCU is through personal or family military or DoD involvement.  So, no you cannot join or qualify without a family member.

In addition, you must be directly (first degree) relation to the family member which must be a parent, grandparent, child or sibling.  The only other way is to be of the "household" of a member, meaning you live with them.  This means if a cousin is "eligible" then you need to get them to join, then their grandparent who is also your grandparent to join, then you could join.

For clarification, NFCU requires that the person be CURRENTLY tied to the military or DoD to be eligible.  This means they must be in the military or working for the DoD "now" or be retired (paid retirement), not just former or "veteran" status.  I am a veteran and was not qualified.  My father in law (active) had to join, then my wife, then me.

Lastly, based upon what you said PenFed's reasoning said, they are not counting your AU accounts as references.  While those accounts give you a nice FICO, upon "manual review" by the Loan Officer, he/she has determined that your majority of tradelines and limits are AU, which is not your financial responsibility and therefore they will not count them as a credit reference (reference means an account they can refer to for YOUR past payment history).

You can try to use Alliant, and POSSIBLY get some type of "instant" online approval based upon your FICO.  However, all auto loans will have some type of manual review, because they all most always involve at least some type of verification and also require closing and title documents.  So even an initial preapproval could be pulled back upon an LO reviewing and seeing that your CR is mostly AU's.

AU's give you a FICO boost.  But it gives you virtually NO help if the application requires a manual review, UNLESS you have adequate "personal" credit tradelines.  If you are relying upon AU's as the majority of your credit and limits, you will have limited opportunity to get meaningful credit.

I would suggest that you contact Alliant or another CU (PenFed is super-prime, ultra conservative as previously posted) and open a savings account.  Drop your auto down payment into savings.  Put a direct deposit from paycheck to it.  Open a checking.  Begin doing your primary banking with them.  If you cannot get a loan initially, use your savings to obtain a secured personal loan, then pay it off in 3 to 6 months.  Get a credit card from them.  You need to build a "relationship" and history with the CU.  In time you will be able to get all the credit you need (so long as you manage wisely).

Good luck.  Smiley Happy
