@USF813 Yes, that is correct.Not one time in my 16 years had I heard of NFCU. And I have since told others about it that were not aware of it either. And they have also been in the Military for a long time.  Keep in mind I am Army, not Navy so I'm sure that has alot to do with it as well.

And yes, DFAS will reimburse excess baggage fees beyond the normal allowance only if it states it on your orders.  That authorization is usually only on your orders for PCS moves, mobilizations, or you are required to carry extra equipment. But they will not reimburse regular baggage charges. I have been stuck twice having to eat my regular baggage fees while I was traveling on Active Duty orders. Now most airlines automatically waive them.

This is true.  I've seen AD on regular leave try to get the airlines to waive the extra baggage or excess baggage fee.  It doesn't work when you're on leave. Also, there is a set amount of bags on the orders based on the location/mission. If more bags are needed, you make an admendment to the orders. Anyways, I always thought you had to be Navy tojoin NFCU until I saw a banner at one of their branches that stated all branches and DOD are welcomed. NFCU is really making a push to get members where I'm at.

Back when I got my NFCU account, you had to be stationed overseas to open it. You could not be in the US. Deployment counted, so most of us got our NFCU accounts while deployed.

They have really relaxed on the standards in twenty years.

As a PS, most airlines waive luggage fees for active duty military members. If you pack the kitchen sink or overstuff weight limits, though, you may have to pony up cash.
