@Jimp2323I joined two months ago using my Grandfathers service in WWII. He died in the 1960's. I was never asked for any information other than name and branch of service. But I told them on the phone I had his Serial # and enlistment paperwork.
This is in line with what most people report. Their 'family military connection' requirement isn't very strict, and often no proof is ever requested.

Does girlfriend/boyfriend count to get you in? For example, you don't serve but your girlfriend did. Is that good enough?
If you're living together, yes. A roomate in the military would be enough.

I joined NFCU by going in the “back door” of the Navy League of San Diego I learned about on this fantastic forum. I joined last spring, let the account sit with just a few dollars, then app’d for the CashRewards card a few months later. $24k CL out the gate! My scores were mid 600s, far from a clean file, but I didn’t have any recent lates so maybe that helped. The "back door" through the Navy League has been closed and deadbolted. You now can only get in with military service... either yourself, of somebody in your direct line (Parents, grandparents, children).
If you can get in, they are fantastic to work with.
They really aren't that strict. Several people have reported a step-parent or uncle being sufficient to get membership. NFCU is far more flexible in what qualifies as a family connection than USAA is for membership.
@Anonymouswrote:Does the service member have to be a member of NFCU? i tried to join USAA and the service member had to be an existing account holder, and my parents dont want anything to do with that. I have heard NFCU is pretty good for refinancing auto loans and i need to do so badly (18 percent interest thru GM Financial)
NFCU is unlike USAA about the membership. With NFCU you can be a member without your parents become a member first. On the other hand USAA is a different story

You don't need a DD214 unless they ask, which seems to be a rarity. Just go and apply - they'll ask what your connection to the military is and just tell them it's through your father, who served in the Air Force during such & such a time, and he's now deceased (very sorry for your loss). I've been a member since October 2017 and they've never once mentioned or asked to see either of my parents DD214 at all.

Should i call to apply or do i need to open a checking acct first? Sorry for so many questions
just call them up and become a member. ask for a checking if its under the same pull, it should be. if they want the 214 you have a month to upload it to them. they are pretty easy to deal with overall

immediately. after you become a member and get online access to the the "offers" area on the top and see if there is anything listed. kind of a pre-approval sort of thing. sort of. you have a bk and your scores are low, not sure how this will factor until you hit the enter key. either you will get what you want or it will be 2 wasted hard pulls
