Hi all,
Ive been lurking this forum and have found some good information. I had some questions about some things though. Do the prequalification sites hold any merrit? The one I am interested in is the Citi site. I am interested in their hilton card, as they have the partnership with some Las Vegas hotels, and I go there 4-6 times a year. Plus since my girlfiend is more interested in traveling now, many of the places we plan on going have some very good hilton hotels. According to the citi prequalified page it is a card I would be interested in. Does this hold any merit, or does everybody pretty much get this page?
Currently my scores are around 645 for eq, somewhere between 625 and 650 for TU and around 605 for exp(my old college dinged me on this one for what I don't know).
Im in the process of rebuilding my credit, and Am hoping for a credit card with a credit limit that can actually be used without being maxed out or having to be paid 5x a month.
Im open to all suggestions and comments as to what to do.
Thanks
Pre-Qual & Pre-app sites are not a guarantee of approval, a HP will still be pulled and your overall credit picture will dictate approval/denial. What are the derogs and how old?
Welcome to the board
My most recent derog is 2 years ago. It was a best buy credit card for $500. It was around the time best buy cards switched from HSBC to another provider, or vice versa, I believe. Anyways, at the time I didn't really understand the "no interest for 6 months" thing. I thought that meant no payments, and as long as I pay it off in the 6 months I'm solid. I was young and dumb, and it was my first store card. But I was not recieving statements or emails for the card for some reason. It went into collections and I settled it.
Then I have 1 30 day late from capital one and one 30 day from my citi card around 4 years ago. I haven't missed a payment since then. My Util is high, but I am paying it down. I am down from around 85% util to around 45%. I have a capital one quicksilver with a 500 limit that I just got, a capital one platinum with a 750 limit, and a citi forward with an 800 limit.
The rest of my negatives are student loans. I did pay those off but they show as 120+ lates. One student loans shows as 6 loans on each credit report, I managed to get 3 of them removed from my TU and EQ. These are all 3-4 years old.
I have 1 ding from my old college for something on my experian, for what I do not know. The only thing I could think is when they charged me $400 in student and campus fees when I was attending a different school. I didn't pay it for a couple of years because I didn't agree with this charge being fair. I eventually paid it because I needed my transcripts. This was on september 2011 and shows as a collection.
I havent missed any payments of anything since then. I have had 1 auto loan that was paid off early, and I now have another auto loan that I have been very consistent on.

IMO I would not app for that card at this moment, I would continue working on getting your utilization down below 20% prior to app. I would also write some GW letters to Cap-1 & Citi on those 30 day lates though they are not affecting your FICO at the moment, they only usually do for 2 years, what is killing you is the 120s on those SLs so I would start a GW campaign on those as well. I would also GW that CA reporting paid.
Thanks, Im currently working on that with all of my derogs. Ultimately, the cards that suit my life best, and I would hope to get, are the hyatt or hilton cards, the total rewards visa, and the amazon visa. How far off do you think I am on those? I can probably have my util down to 20% or lower next month.
Im debating on a 76 gas card as I get all of my gas from there, but I currently pay cash. Since using credit is 10 cents a gallon more it only makes sense to use credit If I have their card. Other than that I would like an Amex one day, but I'm in no rush for that.

I won't profess to understand the finer points of credit-building, some of which have already been addressed in this thread...
I would just point out that of the cards listed in my sig, I was only "pre-qualified" for the Freedom. For what it's worth.
Chase's prequalification page shows nothing for me. I thought it was odd, i entered random stuff on the citi page and it was always the same result so Im not putting much merit into their page.
I would hold off a bit longer. Ive never been pre-approved for a card besides the discover it even though I don't even hold that. since you know what cards you are set on getting I would search more around the forum and look at what scores others have that are getting approved for that card.

Some and they vary but you can't assume that you'll be approved based on prequal, preaaproval, etc.
@dize wrote:I am down from around 85% util to around 45%.
Continue to get your utilization down. 30% max. Get it down to one balance reporting 10% or less before applying.
@dize wrote:Im currently working on that with all of my derogs.
Stick with it and do whatever it takes to avoid them in the future. You can definitely see now how much they hold you back and what it takes to overcome them.
